Greetings from LV, Home of Positive ER Video Poker:

I've received reports that spam mail has been
received by some vpFREE members from other
members. I've also heard from some of the
supposed perps that there computer is virus
free and they didn't send the emails in question.

Unfortunately, today's spammers use sophisticated
viruses that gather addresses on an infected computer
(or in other places) and originate spam emails using
innocent third parties as the apparent senders. I've
even gotten some spam email that was from me to me.

I don't have any suggestions, other than keeping your
own computer virus free with anti-virus software. FWIW,
I get a couple of hundred spam emails every day, and
I'm basically just grinning and bearing it.

and of course never open an e-mail attachment unless you are
expecting it and know its contents.

I was receiving emails from names I recognized from this group asking me to
please remove them from my list. Since I don't have a list, I checked the
"To" in the messages. It was Gamblersprofit@googlegroups.com. I went to
the google groups website and found that anyone can start a distribution
list and put any names on it that they want. So obviously someone harvested
the email addresses from groups such as VPFree and started their own group
without the members' knowledge. I emailed google customer support about
this and removed myself from the distribution list by following the
instructions at the google site. I suggest that anyone who is receiving
these messages do the same and complain to google about their policy of
allowing this to happen without consulting the prospective "members" of the
groups.

The way to remove yourself from this google group (they are in beta-test
stage) is to send an email to Gamblersprofit-unsubscribe@googlegroups.com
with "unsubscribe" as the subject.

Just a word of caution, replying to that address only lets the
people at that group know they have a valid address. It does not
guarantee you will be removed. Anyone who would harvest e-mail
addresses to send spam are already being unscrupous(SP). I would not
trust them with my valid address.

You are right. I considered that, but it was the only way I could
see to stop the unwanted emails. I chose to trust that Google would
act appropriately. Hopefully that wasn't a mistake.

On the contrary...you can unsubscribe yourself from any Google Group by sending an email (subject and body content don't matter) to: groupname-unsubscribe@googlegroups.com

Obviously, you would replace "groupname" in the above address with the name of the group. In this case, it was the gamblersprofit group. These people have already harvested/gleaned your email address, probably from vpFREE (since the related group at Google was also gambling related). Unsubscribing from a Google group is an automated process. A real person does not remove your email address.

I too was subscribed to the "Gamblersprofit" group without my
permission. Although I immediately unsubscribed myself, I'm still
getting emails similar to yours, all related to folks wanting to be
removed from membership. At least some of them were from members of
VPFree. Right now it's only a bit of a nuisance and I'm just deleting
the messages in hopes they will eventually die out. But if it
continues for very long I'll probably complain to Google.
