Does anyone have an educated opinion on which VP software is better,
Frugal by Jean Scott or Win Poker by Bob Dancer?
Software - Which Is Better?
I have them both and prefer WinPoker. My reasoning is that I can see the
different hand possibilities and percentages quicker. I can adjust the
games based on the paytables that are available to me at specific casinos.
I feel more comfortable with it.

Hi, Chingbang;
I have an opinion on this, but first let me correct a possible misunderstanding. Winpoker is not "by" Bob Dancer nor is Frugal Video Poker by Jean Scott. Bob and Jean market these products, but the authors are Jim Wolf (FVP) and Dean Zamzow (BDPW).
Now before commenting on the the value of these programs, I should acknowledge that:
1. I use FVP to create a "companion product" - Frugal Strategy Cards.
2. In the early years of my vphomepage web site (now vpinsider.com) I received a lot of great advice from both Dean Zamzow and TomSki (author of Video Poker Strategy Master), for which I am very grateful. For that reason and because they are all great products, I have provided free advertising for VPSM, BDPW and more recently, FVP, in Video Poker Player since these products came on the market. However, I do not sell any of them nor do I profit from any of them.
Now that all that disclamer stuff is out of the way, Here's my take:
BDPW is, as I said, a great product and it analyzes games quickly and accurately. It also has an excellent user interface with a nice "casino feel to it". I would recommend it to anyone.
FVP also analyzes games and has very large number of built-in games. Either one is an excellent practice tool. I might add at this point that anyone looking for a great video poker trainer should also look at the game-specific VP trainers offered by Cap Richards. These are dynamite trainers that are different than other trainers.
FVP is unique among all of these in that it creates a usable strategy for each game. The strategies can also be modified by the user and saved. Each return will show its expected return. In addition, strategies from other games can be imported and analyzed. These strategies are "penalty-free" - that is, they do not include penalty-card situations. This results in a simpler strategy but one that has an extemely small reduction in theoretical return.
Tomski's VPSM also creates strategies, both a basic (penalty-free) strategy and a "perfect" strategy with penalty-card situations. VPSM is not an analysis tool nor a trainer. BDPW and VPSM are about $30 each and are available from http://www.zamzone.com
FVP is about $40 and is available from http://www.frugalgambler.biz
For more info about the Video Poker Wizard Coach trainers, visit www.videopokerwizard.com.
I'm sure there will be plenty of opinions about these products. I suggest that the real serious player consider eventually get all of them. They are easily worth the investment.
Thanks,
Skip

I don't want to leave an one out. Dan Paymar also has an excellent product, Optimum Video Poker (OpVP) . This is another excellent, fast training and analysis program. It also does ROR calculations and other good stuff. Unlike the other software discussed below, it will run on either Windows or MAC (without a Win emulator/simulator).
Dan is both the author and marketer of this one. $25.

deuceswild1000 asked:
Who/where is Cap Richards?
Cap is the author if Video Poker Wizard -- a training software that,
while not my primary choice for practice, I find intriguing in having
a unique approach to training.
The trainer is relatively simple in design, consisting of the standard
5-card interface and (optionally) a strategy listing off to the right.
When the strategy is displayed, for each dealt hand the holds present
in the hand are checked off.
For the novice user, this is an ideal means by which to learn to
identify various holds -- perhaps making it the best practice tool for
the newly initiated.
I find that this display is also very helpful to the more experienced
player when tackling a game with a difficult strategy, such as All
American. It provides constant reinforcement of hold priorities and
speeds learning of a strategy in which some holds occur relatively
infrequently but are costly when played incorrectly.
A rather extraordinary feature of VPW is that the software stores a
history of all hands played and provides statsitics that can be used
to identify particular weaknesses in strategy plays.
Another interesting feature is that you can select a mode in which
less seldom seen holds are presented with equal frequency as more
common ones. This means that you spend less time tossing garbage
hands or holding single pairs and more time with the interesting,
infrequent holds that tend to be troublesome in play because they're
encountered less often.
Unlike other tutors, there is a separate program for each game type --
and for each game type, only the "full pay" version is offered
(presumably its targeted market are players intent on winning).
Available games are JB, DB, DW, AA, & PE. The may be purchased
individually or in discounted bundles.

Just to avoid any potential misunderstanding ... there's no
association between Cap Richards and myself (although I have met him).
My "vp_wiz" handle is merely a reference to my fascination with the
game and the name confusion I encounter these last few years. There's
no claim to prowess intended.
Cap's "Video Poker Wizard" self-reference is very deserved. He's an
astute student/professor of the game.

The two video poker products offered are interesting as curiosities.
The downloads are functional for non-100%+ ER games (e.g. works for
9/6 Jacks), but require registration purchase for positive expectation
games at $30 apiece. I don't find that the features warrant the
purchase price.

I bought a very nice card-size laminated easy to use card by Dan Paymar for $4 at the Gamblers Store near Maryland Parkway and Charleston.
