In a few weeks I will be going to LV and will stay for several
days at the Orleans. The Orlean's comped the rooms. I received the
comp bcause I had stayed at the Orlean's previously, and did so,
largely because of their reputation for FPDW machines. I'm still
something of a beginner,so they made extra money on me last trip,
but my game is getting better.
I've now heard that they've lowered all (or nearly all?) of the
payments on their machines. I'm very disappointed and I'm tempted to
stay at the Orlean's but play down the street at the Palms where, as
I understand it, full pay DW machines still abound. Is this ethical?
Should I even worry about this?
I feel like the Orlean's deserves my play for comping me the
room. (Further, I still make enough careless mistakes that they
would probably make their money on me.) At the same time, I feel like
they've really let me down and no longer deserve my money. OK you
ethicists, what say you???

First of all, you should understand that your room comp is generated
by your action LAST trip, not your loss expectation THIS trip. It is
true that they figure that you WILL play at the Orleans THIS trip
(and presumably lose about the same amount), but that's yet to be
proved (you could, after all, give them token play and spend the
bulk of your time elsewhere, which is in fact what you're
contemplating). So in a real sense, you've already "earned" this
comp.
An equally important consideration is that you played then, and were
anticipating playing now, based on the presence of available good
video poker. Since they've "changed the rules", in effect, any
lingering obligation to "give them some play" is removed IMHO. It's
very much as if they quintupled the price of all the restaurants,
but still expected you to eat there (the twenty-dollar hamburger
lives only at the Bellagio, but just wait a bit...).
So go ahead, stay there, eat there (the food is still cheap and
good), but give them about thirty minutes of play, period. Then
contact a slot host and tell her WHY: say that you had intended to
play for some 20-30 hours, but could no longer find any of the
fullpay machines that were there during your last visit. So you had
no choice but to go play at the Palms.....
Please, don't feel the LEAST bit guilty about this. They have
screwed tourists and locals alike with their customer-alienation
policies. You need to let them know that they have lost a
potentially good customer.
(Oh, and make sure the room is comped UP FRONT so they don't (or
can't) renege on you when they discover that your total coin-out for
the weekend is $200.)
I personally don't have a major problem if you should "burn" the
Orleans this trip because of the inventory cuts.
However, I think the idea that a room comp is a benefit "earned" by
prior play is a bit misleading. It's offered in recognition that
you're likely to give them sufficient play to warrant the comp.
For example, I don't for a minute believe that the fact NYNY comped me
up front on my very first stay on the strength of a referral by an
Atlantic City host was an indication that I was being granted
something "due" me. They simply had reasonable confidence that I'd
offer up sufficient play to warrant the comp.
Were I in your shoes, I'd examine where I was likely to play in lieu
of Orleans and see if I could get a room there instead at a modest
casino rate (for which I'd seek a comp before departure). It's a
matter of personal preference. I really like to have my play as
convenient as possible.
But whichever way you go, I wouldn't sweat it.

"upfront" comp, cause I actually won.
I'm not kidding, the reservation boothling confided in me "you gave us
plenty of action, but you beat us - had you lost all charges would be picked
up".

Are you saying they reneged on the room offer or are you saying they
would not pick up additional room charges? I have a three day suite
offer from them that I plan to use next month. If they have
downgraded the remaining Double Bonus games to 9/7 I will also stiff
them.

Regarding "fullpay" terminology when communicating with casino
staff ... most visitors should use "favorite" or "lucky" to describe
machines ... to look like typical tourists (not players in the
know). This might get you the benefit of a doubt when explaining why
play fell short of expectations.
Point out the specific change that makes the remaining machines
unattractive ... "full house used to pay 9, now its 8 etc ... I'm
getting less return for my play." Be reasonable and not contentious.
This type of conversation works best with a host who knows you. Do a
good job and you should be able to return (pay schedules may get
upgraded) on good graces (through host) even though marketing offers
are likely to diminish in quality.
