So Cal casino advice requested ...

Bev and I are booked into Harrah’s So Cal over Labor Day weekend. I have the opportunity to go out in advance and stay an additional 4 mid-week nights. Any suggestions for attractive casual play (say $25k/night) would be appreciated.

I’ve only visited Pala and Valley View (outside of H-SoCal). Initial inclination is to do 2 nights at each of those. However, I suspect I might do better in terms of play/promo/amenity options.

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!

SoCal is a pretty tough market unless you are a local and can take advantage of weekly bounce back. Your best bet would be Barona if they happen to have a 7X or better multiplier during your visit. Warning do play like you’re on crack or an employee will soon come by and tell you that you are no longer eligible for point multipliers (or mailers). They are also generous with discretionary comps. Pala is okay if you happen to find a good progressive.

The feedback is much appreciated, particularly for pointing toward Barona.

I should have noted that amenities/atmosphere are big factors. Throw in $1 NSU and I’m pretty satisfied. (I don’t mind a modest house advantage these days … that can even be an “advantage” in itself inasmuch as it dissuades me from playing “too hard” and instead relax over the stay.)

Frankly, I find it VERY appealing that Barona goes out of their way on their website to encourage you to call and request a room comp based upon competitor status/room comp avail.

Any other suggestions from others welcome … will be booking within a couple of days. (Modest change to trip schedule means that I will settle on one property for a 3 night stay.)

I found Barona to be the strangest place I’ve played. Only played there once and it was a 7x.

Autohold turned on for most machines and heat very quickly... Luckily an employee was discussing my ‘rate of play’ very loudly on his headset so I switched to DDB from NSUD and slowed down before switching back to NSUD. The employee noticed I was playing DDB and ran off. Within minutes $200 in promo slot play was added to my card, in addition to the 7x points.

Now how can I pass up this type of side amusement … sounds like I need to break out a Novena card, to be placed prominently on the machine and tapped twice whenever holding 4 cards to the draw

Pechanga might also be a good option. Lots of restaurant choices and the new pool complex looks very nice. They just built new hotel tower so rooms are plentiful. Last I clocked it, comp rate about 0.1% to 0.15% on JoB and NSUD machines you’d probably play.

I’m not sure when this was written or posted, but what is meant by “make sure you play like you’re on crack”? I have an idea what the author might have meant, but I want to be sure. Would or could someone elaborate on what “playing like you’re on crack” entails? Unless it’s a trade secret, of course. Thanks in advance if you can, thanks also if you’d rather keep it a secret.

Not sure of this specific reference … was there a subject casino?

But, in truth, I do recall something like that this summer in reference to Barona. However, if I recall correctly, the suggestion was that playing in this manner was a surefire means by which to be excluded from promotions (including any applicable to the current day).

Look up under youtube for “best of tweakers”. One of the cool things about smart phones is that tweakers can now post videos about stuff that they’re up to. Welcome to tweaker nation.

Yes it was about Barona. But it seemed just the opposite, rather that if one did not play “like one was on crack” then he risked being “punished” by losing his mailers or point multiplier. Maybe I misunderstood it.

Hi Iguana, thanks for your reply. I posted before I saw your post. This is turning kind of funny, even if crack is definitely not funny.

But I think we have a potential new book title here: “Winning at Video Poker: The Crack Method”.

Tweaker’s guide to beating the slots.

Hit or miss?

(for “hit or miss” meme search for “tik tok hit or miss challenge” while on youtube, or in general just search for tik tok)

We’re digressing a bit. I did look up tweekers on youtube as you mentioned. I don’t even know what crack looks like, I don’t think I have ever seen it.

As to my original question, I’m still curious. Does “playing like you’re on crack” mean to not show proficiency at video poker or they will quickly “punish” you? Or does it mean playing NSU really fast, “like you’re on crack”, will bring unwanted attention? Or is it recommended to play games with poor paytables, “like you’re on crack”? The comment captured my attention and imagination and curiosity. I guess what I really want to know is what will make you “acceptable” at that casino. Or not acceptable.

Blend in. If there is a lot of tweakers, if employees are tweaking, look like a tweaker. Also, tweakers have an advantage, according to the youtuber Cg Kid, crystal meth users have 12 times the dopamine of sexual orgasm and it lasts days.

Thanks, Iguana, that’s a little weird, though.

"Playing like you're on crack" refers to making yourself look like a true gambler... Preferably one with a problem. Remember VP is supposedly the "crack cocaine of gambling". Don't play 1000 hands an hour of NSUD while wearing iPod headphones. Order beers and shots. You don't have to drink them., play some Double Double Bonus or other square games etc. Push the change button and get someone to come interact with you and see that you're playing a square game. Then switch over to NSUD and occasionally switch back to DDB or whatever. Look like a square.

Barona used to have multipliers up to 12X (1.2% CB) and machines on turbo with extremely accurate Autohold. Pros would come in and sometimes bring “associates” who would bang on the draw/deal button of the $1 5/10 Play NSUD like it was a slot tournament, not even bothering to look at the screen. Generally they were allowed to play less than an hour, then be told they would no longer be eligible for multipliers. Over time they downgraded most good games and removed Autohold from those that remained. The multipliers continued up until a couple of months ago. They continued to take countermeasures against players that appeared to play the good games too fast on multiplier days. Now they limit video poker multipliers to 3X for all promotions. I’d say knock yourself out now. Best games ( no Autohold) are 99.92% JW and 99.8% TBP plus 0.3% CB on multiplier days. Mailers suck so don’t plan on much there.
