Smoking

In the mean time, smoking in casinos is one of the biggest vp

negatives for me. I suspect that casinos in LV will probably be non-
smoking in a few years.

I realize that this is an emotional issue for most people; smokers are defensive and non-smokers detest it. I'm not a smoker or a drinker (guess I'm sort of a bore), but it doesn't bother me.
The one sure thing, however, is every smoker seems to light up, after a big win! Linda

Hi Linda,

I don't want to invoke the hex-gremlin that I usually keep in a semi-
comatose state, in my purse, but if big wins are what is causing
excessive smoking........well......I may have to re-think the issue.

Babe

I'm not an expert on the habits of smokers in casinos by any means,
but it has been my observation that when the going is rough at the
machines, they light up to see if their luck changes; when their
credits are going up and their session goes swell, they light up,
apparently, to encourage propitiate the gods of luck to keep smiling;
when they have a big jackpot, they light up to celebrate; when they
run out of their money, they still have cigarettes or cigars and
light up as a consolation prize. This has been my impression from
playing near smokers on many occassions for over a decade, but then
maybe I'm jumping to conclusions.

I'm generally with you Linda (well, I really prefer that someone not
light up at my dinner table during my meal - I can deal with after).
But that's assuming adequate ventillation.

Unfortunately it's the rule, not the exception, that AC casinos are
deficient in this respect and I typcially return from a weekend with a
suitcase that smells like a smokehouse. I consider it pretty bad that
I find the need to pack separate clothes in which to relax outside of
my play, or that an outfit requires laundering after only a modest
number of hours' wear.

This isn't nearly the problem on the LV strip. Even a joint such as
BC seems to deal with the situation (the "non-smoking" rooms are
another matter ;). But all too often when someone lights up at a
machine in AC the smoke is blown directly on an adjacent player. (I
get the feeling that this is a prevalent problem at some of the LV
locals as well.)

A cigarette that sits in an ashtray a foot from my face (or worse yet,
held at shoulder height next to me) is an issue. Even when a
considerate smoker holds the cigarette low, my pants still reek after
spending an hour or so next to them.

···

------

Sorry for the diatribe. I consider this a very sensitive issue and
don't take lightly any suggestion that the activities of another
should be restricted.

As far as I'm concerned, this is a ventillation issue. But it's clear
that the problem isn't going to be effectively addressed in that
direction anytime soon. "Non-smoking" areas haven't been an adequate
resolution. Either there are no "playable" machines in the designated
area or the machines simply aren't sufficiently isolated. (Forgive me
if I'm loathe to request that good paytables be added to the
non-smoking machines at a time when I'm trying to blend in with the
ignorant masses

The most bizarre instance in AC has been at Borgata. They've recently
restored a good number of 9/6 Jacks to the floor, in a non-smoking
section to boot. To their credit, security/attendents very actively
enforce the non-smoking restriction. But we're talking about a couple
machine rows sandwiched in between unrestricted machines. There's
something about this area that concentrates smoke and I fare more
poorly than when these paytables were originally available in
unrestricted areas of the casino.

------

Fact is that I've long held the view that a smoker's right to engage
in their indulgence is to be respected. However, over time I've come
to look at that right as being on equal footing with an assertion that
I should be permitted to "relieve" myself in a convenient manner
without leaving my machine, no matter the consequence to others.

Frankly, I'm tired of enduring the problem. In truth, if LV strip
casinos can cope with the situation to most players' satisfaction, AC
casinos should manage to. But they haven't and if NJ's governor is
successful in his initiative to ban smoking in public areas, including
casinos, I'll be pleased.

- Harry

(FWIW, I consider anyone who would suggest that I can simply avoid the
smoke by electing to stay away from the casinos about as obnoxious as
those non-smokers who resort to near-insulting diatribe in their
discussion of the issue.)

Anyone who can get at least 2 books on vp published,

is anything but a bore in my estimation! For anyone who doesn't
know about this, Linda has her SECOND VP book coming out next month.
I'm sure that she would be happy to provide details if you contact
her. BTW, I am NOT her publisher. Just a fan.

I know exactly what you mean Harry. I can hardly

abide the odor when I return from LV, and unpack my smoky-smelling
wardrobe. EVERYTHING immediately goes into the washer or to the
cleaners.

I almost never play on the Strip. I can tell

you, however, that this is a BIG problem downtown, in Henderson and
in North LV. Some smokers seem almost militarily intent on sharing
their tobacco fumes with those in the immediate vicinity.

A cigarette that sits in an ashtray a foot from my face (or worse

I don't worry too much about my slacks. I'm

much more concerned with my lungs. IMO, the most egregiously rude
smokers are those that hold their cigarette (or heaven forbid, cigar)
between the second and third finger of the same hand with which they
pound on the buttons. Waving the weed around in this fashion quite
effectively chokes and asphixiates every poor soul within a 10 foot
radius.

I wish I had a Bennie for every time that

particular bit of logic ws directly to me, after I POLITELY asked if
the smoker would be kind enough to hold the cigarette in the hand
furthest away from my face.

Oh, I've gathered that she had her suspicions 25 years ago ...

- H.

Quite true. I spend about 30"/trip washing out clothes that reek of smoke. I wonder how much time is lost from playing because of guests changing out and washing clothes that stink of smoke. Very problematic at Palace Station, Sams Town, and Stardust.

Just keep the cause and effect straight...big wins causes
smoking...smoking doesn't cause big wins...whew

That's why I always root for smokers to lose 1. lose and leave 2. I
know once that big hit occurs a large cloud will follow!

Hi Jay,

I actually have such an affinity for fellow VP players, that
I rarely wish one ill fortune, for ANY reason. However, when
I am seated at the end of a row of machines (always my seat of
preference)leaning as far away from the smoker in the next seat,
as possible, and the side-stream smoke is still curling up my
nostrils, stinging my eyes and irritating my throat, I DO wish them
far away from me poste haste. If, in addition to exhaling billows
of smoke from their mouth, they also have the cigarette gripped
between the same fingers that are pounding away at the buttons on
the machine (thereby insuring that the folks sitting on either side
are inundated with smoke fumes) than I begin to wish, in earnest,
for the quick and complete demise of their bankroll.

These thoughts make me quite sad, as I really hate to see anyone
lose their money to the evil casinos. But in this case, since they
are actively interfering with my personal enjoyment, not to mention
my well being, I have no compunction about hoping for their quick
losses and subsequent departure from the casino.

Hopefully, sooner rather than later, smoking of every kind will be
banned from all public places in the US. Until then, we in the
75% to 85% non-smoking majority, will continue to be plagued by
tobacco fumes.

Babe

Babe, I suggest that you need to get your priorities straightened
out. <G>

Whenever there's a choice of rooting for some unknown player
OR the casino, it's a no brainer for me. The casinos have to
make money or there's no vp for me to play.

Hi Tom,

That's why you're the Administrator, and I am one of the multitude
to whom you must show the error of their ways.

I just never thought about the fact that, while rooting against the
cigarette puffing player, I was actually doing my part to ensure
a good vp inventory!

How much easier it will be for me now, to invoke the hex, w/o feeling
guilty about the deed. I can now consider that I am actually
benefitting those of us who deserve it the most.

Thanks, Tom!
