Smoking vs non smoking

I was recently at Atlantis and there was some heated discussion about
smoking in the "cave" under the escalators. There is a concentration
of 100 and 50 play, which I like to play. Anyway when someone is
smoking to your left, the breeze blows the smoke right in your face. I
can handle the lack of clean air in the general area, but not in my
face. Others had the same problem. I just move, but there were some
MILITANT smokers that gave the saying "its my right to smoke in here"
I am not saying that they were trying to ruin my time at the casino,
but it does. I wonder why the casinos just don't have a section of
machines that is at least 20 ft from the smoking ones to avoid getting
your eyes burned out by the smoke from the person next to you. The non
smoking section upstairs is nice, but there is not the selection of
machines that one needs to play. I am going to bring this up to
management, any words of wisdom???

Go to Bed, Bath and Beyond and get two of those battery powered
portable fans with the 5 inch blades (grey plastic, not the
flourescent misting fans). Place a magnetic sticky strip on the
bottom of the fan, and it will stay on the machine.

If theis doesnt work, a place a little room fragrance from a refill
bottle on the blades. A strong odor. like cinnamon or vanilla will
ruin the flavor of any smokers cigarette. If all fails, go to Cabelas
by Boomtown and in the deer hunting section you can purchase a bottle
of skunk essence. It is used to hide human odors in the woods. It is
thick like mucus, so just use a cotton swab to wet the blades.

BTW, there are two 50 play machines in the SKyterrace. Not sure how
the paytables compare, though.

Look for machines at the bottom of the stairs that lead up to the sky
terrace, or across from java coast.

That was the problem, a fan, the smoker did not like it. I am not
trying to start up a uproar with the smoking people, I would like to
find a way that smoking and non smoking people can enjoy gambling. As
far as I am concerned you just can't have a smoker and non smoker
RIGHT next to each other and I am trying to get some dialog on how to
approach the casino. Yes, the pay tables and choice of denominations
are different on the 50 play upstairs.

I don't usually get involved in smoking vs. nonsmoking in a casino but I will say that the last time I was in Reno (last November) may be the last time for me.

Tears were streaming down my face and I was in actual pain due to how the smoke in the casinos affected my eyes. I tried eye drops and allergy pills and I was still miserable the whole time. I will not go through that again therefore the casinos will lose because I usually bring a group of people with me who wouldn't normally go unless I'm going.

I'll just drive the 20 minutes up the road to a local casino that has a terrific nonsmoking section even though the machines aren't the "real deal" here in Washington.

Sounds like you are particularly sensitive to smoke. As noted, the
Sky Terrace at Atlantis is a very nice alternative. Silver Legacy
has a small non-smoking area (tolerable, but not perfect) in front of
the buffet.

I'm not as sensitive as you and get along nicely by playing mostly in
the morning and early afternoon and doing something else in the
evenings when casino activity peaks. There's probably no solution
for older smaller casinos other than avoidance.

Don't even consider Washington casinos ... you'll end up with tears
of regret.

Probably not a good idea since it is probably illegal to create a
noxious or offensive odor in a public place. It is a violation of the
Texas Penal Code to do so in Texas.

a friend was just looking over my shoulder and commented "if you're at
cabela's anyway, go with the deer urine. i guarantee it smells worse
than skunk." i will defer to her expertise on the matter! i try to
stay away from both, personally, though i do like your idea.

a different friend takes to singing along with the background music,
loudly, whenever a smoker sits down next to him. having heard him
sing, i'm pretty sure this would be at least as effective as skunk
essence.

that's really rather sad, isn't it?

if such a law exists, it would render the debate over smoking laws
entirely moot.

When I made the post I was serious on how to find ways for a casino to
BETTER accommodate both smokers and non smokers. It was the same in CA
as it is now in the casinos, where the smokers had ALL the rights and
non smokers had no rights. Now in CA smokers have NO rights, and it
would be nice to come up with something reasonable for both. I live in
a small town and after the smoking ban went into effect, the local
newspaper editor told people to ignore the law and there WERE warnings
of skunk carcases to be brought into the restaurants that did not comply.
Again it would be nicer to to it in a civil manner

I was at the LVHilton about 8 months ago and some women didn't like the
smoke around the machines they were at (FYI the sports section - of all
places)..they grabbed a can of freshner off of the cleaning person's
cart and kept spraying it. The fumes were getting bad (people coughing
and covering their face) from it. A Hilton rep came over and told them
they had to stop and took the can away..a few minutes later some other
hilton suits came over and was talking to them (not sure what was said)
but the women got mad and cashed out and left. If you are sitting in a
smoking area - then you have to tolerate it. Most of the time I have
found people are okay about holding the cigarette over to the other
side or some even just put their arm behind the chair to avoid the
smoke going into someone else's face.
Its not the smoke so much as the ventilation in the casinos. If
casinos provided better ventilation then the problem would dimish
tremedously I think.

Probably not a good idea since it is probably illegal to create a
noxious or offensive odor in a public place. It is a violation of the
Texas Penal Code to do so in Texas.
