Smoking Bans/Now: Comped Bartop SOP

So what part of the service did you take offense? Was it the bartender's
manner and tone in requesting maximum play, or the rule of maximum play
itself to
get comped?

Of course it was his manner. Rules are rules and a quiet explanation would
have served just as well. I don't make (or comment on) the rules at that
casino. But it is how they are implemented that matters.

In another case, I was directed to try to get a drink (without playing) in a
poker room at a big Strip casino. I've done this many times without
incident but in this case, when I asked for 'orange juice and soda,' the waitress
loudly asked if I was playing. When I said no, she huffed, "Then I can't serve
you!" This is patently not true - what about wives and girlfriends of
players - wouldn't they drag their man out of there after being embarrassed like
that? Over a nonalcoholic drink, no less. That's why the casinos want to
have us in there finding out how their employees treat guests.

A nice little white lie in this spot is "I'm on the list. I'm waiting
for a seat."

---Karen is my friend and not trying to be argumentative, but are we really
that thirsty or was this part of your shop? You weren't playing nor were you
with a player who was playing but you just wanted a drink that you didn't
want to pay for? Were they asking you to do that? To see what the employees
would say as a part of your shop? Just seems like we're sometimes trying to
take advantage. Isn't the idea of a free drink to "comp" a person who is
playing and not just free drinks? Am I missing something?
