Are all slot clubs on a cash back in lieu of comps system? It seems
to me that the rates are equal most of the time and occasionally a
little bit higher for comps, so this leads me to believe that it's one
or the other, but not both.
Slot club question
Yes, no, maybe, sometimes, never, etc, etc. There are as many
answers to your questions as there are slot clubs -- they are all
different. Some slot clubs give only comps and no cash back, some
give one or the other, some give both. Best check with the individual
casinos about their clubs. The personnel at the slot booth can
usually tell you but not always; some (most) Harrah's boothlings don't
have a clue.

Can you give any guidance related to the slot clubs you have joined?
I can see from the database that Harrah's has cashback of 0.07% and
earned comps of 0.3%. Does this mean an effective comp of 0.37%? How
about your experience at other places?

Be carefull, our Harrah's must be different than some others, we get
about 0.1% cash back and exactly 0.1% comp, any playable (or close to)
VP machine gives zero bonus reward credits and it is $10 per earned
reward credit, so that is $10 for each comp penny (0.1%). The other
one I belong to here in STL give 0.25% cash back plus discretionary
comps (unkown calculation) or you can get a littl more if you take
comp instead of cash. Basically you have to check each casino you are
interested in and combine that with the games that they offer to find
your best deals, and it may vary by day of the week depending on extra
promotions.

Jim's experience with Harrah's pretty much echos our own, i.e., poor
return for your gambling investment. As he stated we get .1% back in
comps and "who knows" percent cash back. The cash back comes in the
mail once a month in the form of a coupon -- we call them Harrah's
welfare checks. 
They are not much, I would guess a lot less than
.1% since we get far more comp $ than cash back.
So why do we even go there at all? Well they have some decent
machines (Kansas City Harrah's), good eating places, and the comps are
portable from casino to casino -- handy when we travel.
Ameristar, the other casino we visit in Kansas City, gives about .33%
cash back and does not distinguish between VP and slots. Like
Harrah's the comps do not count against cashback, however, if you wish
you can cash in points for comps instead of cash at a 25% bonus.
Don't know what the comps formula is but it is VERY generous. We get
(or could get) far more food comps than we can possibly use. We also
get free rooms at the hotel, free concert tickets, free tickets to the
upcoming NASCAR Cup race, etc.
When we visit Vegas we go into the vacation/tourist mode and free room
and food become more important than cash back. Sometimes we accept
invitations to casinos on the strip such as the Venetian and play
there even though they have no full pay machines (at our level of
play). We consider it part of the 'dues' paid in order to stay for
free in a fine hotel. (But Lucky Lucy hit a royal there on the last
visit so walked away with some of their money anyway.)
Don't know what choices you have in casinos but I would urge you to
check them out first for playable VP machines then their slot club.
With so few 100+% VP machines left, the slot club benefits are about
the only "profit" we get. The slot clubs are a very important part of
the gambling experience.
