Tongue in cheek is not usually so caustic. I was not amused at all.

When one uses the phrase "taking people's money," that implies that they do so without giving any goods/value in return. That is VERY far from the case in this instance.

Furthermore, this forum is NOT the appropriate place to criticize a "competing" one. Not only is it a cheap shot, it shows extremely bad taste. It makes me appreciate a moderated forum that does not tolerate personal insults.

A general observation with no one in particular in mind at the moment: I wonder if people who post nasty things on the Internet say nasty things to other people when face to face with them. Do people think they don't have a reputation if people don't know their face? I have an opinion about each person who posts by what they say and how they say it. There are some people I don't care to meet in person.

Jean : I have a question for you.
If one was not a member of Skips' forum, where would one find an appropriate place to discuss it ?

Discussing something is different than sending cheap shots. It is fine to give a good REASON why you feel something should be negatively mentioned. For example, I don't like Casino X because they don't give cashback.

To just give a personal opinion that you don't like something that 944 people DO like - I guess you are quite free to say so on ANY unmoderated forum on the Internet, including this one. But nice people have learned that it is not necessary to say or post every negative personal opinion they think of.

Sounds reasonable to me. You agree AP?

I agree completely. The only thing I had a problem with was Jean saying that this was not an appropriate
forum for discussion of Skips' ventures.

Jean, I am sorry you were not amused.

they do so without giving any goods/value in return. That is VERY far
from the case in this instance.

Jean, you are entitled to your opinion. I too have my "Skip
Hughes
Group" lapel pin. I have been a member, I have gone to the
gatherings, so I speak with some experience. I belonged from the very
early days of the group. I stayed, I read, and I listened to the
opinions offered.. I saw no real value in the group. I am sure that
the fact that his membership has declined offers some validity to my
argument. For reference VP-Free has 1689 members and VP-Mail has 884
members. I would love to know what his retention rate is among his
subscribers.

Furthermore, this forum is NOT the appropriate place to criticize

a "competing" one. Not only is it a cheap shot, it shows extremely
bad taste. It makes me appreciate a moderated forum that does not

Squelching the voice of the opposition is censorship. Lively spirited
debate need not be censored.
Moderated debate is a debate where an intermediary allows each side
to makes it point, without be outshouted by the opposing side. A
moderator makes sure both sides get speak their minds.
Skip Hughes has always been much more of a censor then a moderator.

A general observation with no one in particular in mind at the

I am happy to discuss my points of view in person. My views and
opinions are the same, here, one the telephone, or in public. I am
not a person who becomes brave when sitting behind a keyboard. My
views about Skip were voiced directly to him, so I am not talking
behind his back. Skip and I had it out long ago over what I viewed as
censorship on his board. Sour grapes on my part? HELL NO! He is
entitled to run his business as he sees fit. On the obverse side of
that statement, I am entitled to take my business elsewhere.
Jean you and I have met, you may not remember we had a very pleasant
conversation at the SHG group at the Hard Rock a few years ago. If
you were not referring to me, sorry for being so bold, to think you
were.

Jean I have a high regard for you. You are a motivated person, who
has by all appearances been successful at you Frugal ventures. I
learned long ago not to pick a fight with a person who buys ink by
the barrel. I strongly disagree with many of your views, at the same
time, I also find some of your theories to be valid. I guess you and
I have to agree to disagree. I will continue to forward my views. I
know you will do the same. I suspect however the majority of the time
you and I will have to agree to disagree.

I do not think comparing a free site with a pay site by numbers is a valid way to judge quality. Any free site will always have more members. You can sign up and then never go back to the site again and just not bother to cancel your membership.

If someone picks my pocket, or demands my wallet using force or
threats of force, that's taking my money. If someone says they're
selling me a computer but gives me an empty box, that's taking my
money. When the government makes me pay taxes under the threat of
putting me in jail, they're taking my money.

Maybe there are cases where taking things is justified, but it ought
to be saved for extreme situations, because taking things from people
infringes on their freedom.

If someone puts a cookie up for sale for $10, they're not taking my
money, they're offering an exchange. If someone offers me a job for
$1/hour, they're not taking my money, they're offering an exchange.

Making an offer is never a problem. The more options I have, the
better. If someone wants to restrict the exchanges people can offer
each other, that reduces everyone's freedom. No matter how
outrageously unfair you may think the offer is, it still shouldn't be
restricted, because everyone has different values, so each person
should have the right to decide for themselves.

It's a common situation that people confuse taking things with making
an offer. They talk about businesses as if they're taking people's
money, & talk about the government as if it's *not* taking people's
money. I think it's better for everyone if the distinction is made
very clear.

I think there is definitely a place for both groups. I am a member of both
groups and gain much value from both.

Each group has a different flavor. Some people like chocolate, others like

Not unusual for something FREE to have more members than something
that cost....
I find both useful, but because this is free, a lot of nonsense
discussed here from time to time.
Why don't we move on now. Everyone is an adult an can make there own
decisions on most VP matters.

I am on both of them and get valuable information on both. There is always room for competition in the USA (and the world).

I want to have all the gambling information I can get so I can find the best opportunities and make the most money. I feel Skip's site is well worth the money to any VP player who really wants to stay on top of things. Not everyone who posts there also posts the same information here. I EASILY get one piece of information a year that makes me enough money that I could more than cover the cost of a subscription and actually a lot more. I also find money- making information here.

I only wish that the two sites could be combined into one master one since it is time-consuming to read so many posts. I am a speed-reader and can use the delete button expertly but I still am up far too late every night at my computer.

My computer identified this post as "spam".

Let me state for the record that I belong to both groups and completely

Your use of Yahoo! Groups is subject to http://docs.yahoo.com/info/terms/

This really is a pretty tame flame thread. None of the comments were
that bad.

My input

1. Skip Hughes has the best vp related info on the web for my money.
2. This site is the best for the price.
3. Jean Scott is The Queen of Comps to me.
4. Rob Singer is an idiot. (numbers don't lie)

Even BS is smart enough to make a new yahoo ID to lurk and make another
yahoo ID to support BS. If that persona gets banned, making another
is a trivial task. I normally agree that attacking people who are not
allowed to respond is in poor form, but BS is an exception to
the rule. His views are dangerous and we have lots of newbies who
need to know this. What is worse is the fact that he is a good
snake-oil salesman. Those who don't know better, even fairly bright
people, can be misled.

By the way, which numbers, specifically, are the ones that don't lie?

The ones that have been proven to tell us how to evaluate and play VP.
BS contradicts all these results in his writings.

QZ, I understand your point. However, to me the rationale for
avoiding R. Singer discussion here is that ultimately it's detrimental
to all concerned.

I think it's of value to the "newbie" only if there's some balance in
the viewpoints/facts that are presented. In that manner, the newbie
can make a rational assessment on what to accept. When only one side
of the coin is presented, even if it's felt that it's the only side
supported by reason (and frankly, that's not always been the case),
the arguments can become difficult to distinguish from propaganda.

The nub of the problem is that it's clear from past efforts that such
discussion quickly becomes disfunctional -- and there's plenty of
blame to go around for that. It's an unfortunate fact, but there's
little doubt that prospects for future discussion will change.
Essentially, the discussion takes on political overtones that should
always be avoided in polite company.

For that reason any criticism or support of RS statements are to be
avoided here.
