Sites to see

There does come a time that someone will want to see some of the sights
around Las Vegas and not play that much. This might be one of those times for me.
I will be meeting friends and I do not think they are that much of gamblers.
I have been to Valley Of Fire (I enjoyed it). What about Mt Charleston, Red
Rock Canyon, or Hoover Dam? Is the new Monorail moving people yet?
I need a slight diversion to keep them happy. But. I would hate to make the
trip and not have some play time.

The tour through Hoover Dam is good (I've been through
it twice, back in the '80s). I didn't think it was
open for tours since 9/11, but the web site says it
is.

As I recall, there are stairs to climb and some
walking but it's nothing tremendously strenuous for
most folks. Even so, I would make this a "morning
event" with a rest period and lunch afterwords.

PS There's a great big switch on one wall labeled "Las
Vegas ON/OFF". When the guide isn't looking, give
that sucker a pull. It's great fun listening to the
alarms go off and watching people yelling and running
around like chickens with their heads cut off!

Monorail should be running by summer/in summer/shortly after summer.

My wife likes to go horse-back riding at Bonnie Spring's. I think it's out past Red Rock. I went once and it was nice, but I usually stay in the casino and feed the machine's.
Dont miss the view from the top of the Stratisphere. Its awesome at night.

The monorail is not "live" yet...

Mt. Charleston, at this time of year is still pretty cold. In the
summer its a perfect place to go and get out of the heat...some great
hikes...Cathedral Rock and Mary Jane Falls are not too dificult.

Red Rock and Valley of Fire are great hiking locations, especially
now, when its not too hot...be sure to bring plenty of water,
though...you'll need it.

I think it was Huntington Press that published a book called "Hiking
Las Vegas" (or something like that)...have it at home...in the office
right now...its pretty good.

Red Rock admission is $5 or a Golden Eagle/Age/Access pass. The 13
mile loop is spectacularly pretty. There's a picnic area at Willow
Spring, and several hiking trails along the loop. The park is crowded
only on weekends. I went hiking two weeks ago with an out of town
friend and we had a blast.

If you decide to hike a bit, wear sturdy walking shoes at a minimum
(not necessarily boots), bring plenty of water, sunscreen, sunglasses
and a hat. Remember that desert plants have thorns and dress accordingly.
