Silverton (the Dark side)

I agree with all the positives as stated previously.

However before everyone rushes to play here there are a couple negatives.

1. On weekends it is extremely smoky. There are typically numerous cigars and nearly everyone is a chain smoker.
2. The best games are FPJW. However on these 7 machines Keno also exists. And quite often everyone of these games is filled by a chain smoking Keno player. Last weekend you could actually observe a huge cloud of smoke around these machines. This was close to midnight when typically the smoke lessens at many locations. I actually thought something was on fire. It was so bad it was actually humorous. (I did not play here at this time. I chose to continue breathing)
3. These same machines are also surrounded by short pay .05 DDB games that are played constantly. If you are fortunate to get a seat at the Jokers you can be assured that you will be surrounded by people playing the short pay nickels. The people are fine however you can be assured that they will be accompanied by cartons of cigarettes. During a period of time last weekend of the 35 seats in this area 33 were smokers.....
4. The bar with the JOB progressive is next to the sports book (and you guessed it) is often very smoky. Keno exists on these bar machines as well and is often the game of choice.
5. There are about 25-30 good .25 machines with decent or potentially decent games. However if you try to access them in the evenings on weekends they will typically be full.

Note: Even with these negatives I make accommodations to play here. This is in contrast to the fact that I refuse to play at Fiesta Rancho because of the smoke. I realize that some people go to FR after midnight or the wee hours of the morning to lessen the chance of smoke. At this point I have not been willing to do that. However, because of the positives mentioned in other posts about Silverton, in spite of the smoke, we still have it on our play list. And if you are lucky there are occasions when there is little smoke. Fiesta Rancho always smells like smoke regardless if anyone is smoking. At Silverton it appears that eventually the smoke dissipates after the forest fire is extinguished.

I am a huge fan of Silverton.

I am from out of town and I visit Silverton regularly, almost monthly,
thanks to room/cash offers - usually on weekends.
I am a non-smoker who hates cigarette smoke because my mother died of
emphysema caused by cigarettes.
Contrary to ednar's post, I have *never* been bothered by smoke at
Silverton.

I don't think that anyone who has read my posts could possibly view
me as an apologist for casino smoke or the smokers who sometimes
blow it my way.

Ednar sadly mentions that he lost a close family member to cigarette
smoking. I also lost my beloved Mom to lung cancer, as a direct
result of a 50 year smoking addiction. So, believe me, I hate
smoking as much as anyone.

However, I must respectfully disagree with ednar's assessment
of Fiesta Rancho.

I have stayed at FR many times, and have loved it every time. Of
course, there were instances when I was less than comfortable because
of someone who sat down next to me and lit up. I didn't, however,
notice that this problem was worse at FR than at any other busy
casino.

I just regretfully acknowledge that I have to put up with this until
and unless all indoor public smoking is banned. I have rejected the
alternative of avoiding casinos altogether. Despite the smoking, I
still find VP very entertaining.

I will continue to stay at FR whenever it is practical for me to do
so, since I very much enjoy their great .25/.50/1.00 vp inventory.
I certainly understand why a higher denom. player would be less
enchanted than I am.

Just my opinion and 2c worth, of course.

Note the one comment in my post, "And if you are lucky there are occasions when there is little smoke " And it also depends where you play.

However I *guarantee* that you would have noticed the lack of oxygen this last Friday night. We cut our stay short and cancelled Saturday night rather than battle the smoke another evening......

Years ago (8?) someone told us not to play at Sam's Town because it was very smoky. We stayed there and did not notice it to be that bad. However on our next visit we found it to be absolutely terrible.

Obviously the different reports of level of smokiness at FR and Silverton indicate that at certain times it is bad and certain times it is not as bad. I know when it is smoky and it has been unbearable at both of these locations at various times. If other's experience is different, I can understand.

However suffice it to say that anyone who intends to frequent these properties may discover it to be smoky. Either that or I am a liar and have an axe to grind with these two locations.

I will end on this note. I have found both places to be very smoky on numerous occasions. YMMV (Your mileage may vary.)

PS. It was Curtis Rich who mentioned the close family member. (However I have had the exact same experience)

Of course! Perhaps my experiences have not been as horrific as
yours have been because I play primarily during the week, and during
the day and early evening. I avoid weekends and late evenings for
that very reason.

I am sure that no one thinks that you are either a prevaricater or
vindictive. Apparently, your experiences differed from mine and the
discomfort of the smoky atmosphere outweighed the good VP
opportunties.

As have I. Giving myself permission to paraphrase myself, my comment
was that, IMO, FR was not smokier than MOST busy casinos. i.e. They
are ALL unpleasantly smoky at times.

PS. It was Curtis Rich who mentioned the close family

I'm sorry. I do understand the heartache, the frustration and the
anger that is part of this tragic experience.

I was at Silverton this morning around 11am, just for a half hour before
driving home. I paid particular attention to the 'smokiness' (in light of
recent posts).
I found it no more smokey than any other casino. If there was cigarette
smoke, it didn't find its way to me.
BTW, they have some nice snacks (including strawberry/banana smoothies) in
the High Limit Slots area. And, they have two massage chairs which anyone
can use.

I am glad for you Curtis. I have found it to be very good in the a.m.
also. This is my last post.
