Silly VP Superstitions

Howdy

I will venture to guess some of the posters on this board have a superstition or two that?is part of their vp experience. For example, wearing a certain?article of clothing or carrying a lucky charm. Then there is a favorite machine because they hit a RF on it at least once. Or how about NOT playing a machine because someone just hit a Royal even though its the only one available at the time.

Here is one..patting a machine because it gave you a good hand hoping it will give you more of the same because you showed your appreciation.

Not practicing at home because you are afraid you will hit a RF and it will jinx you because you are in a drought and you want to do it at the casino.

Drawing four to a Royal and waiting for people to pass by you before you hit the button.

These are just some off the top of my head. I am sure there are more.

At least I am not superstitious...Knock on wood!

I, for one, have no superstitions when playing VP but remember well the lady playing next to
me who, after seeing me get a royal flush last week at the MGM Grand and as I was waiting
for the handpay, exclaimed" I want some of that!!" and proceeded to give my arm a rub
before returning to her game. I didn't stick around to see what the result was.

Ok....good list....how about some of these?

  - inserting large bills in machine to let the computer know you are a serious player and thus it will pay off bigger
  - never playing side by side with your companion because no Casino in their right mind would ever put two big hitting machines right next to each other
  - selecting machines with a loud turned up volume because the casino wants other patrons to hear it when it hits to entice them to play and has thus been set to hit often and big
  - honey...are you going to keep playing there....you just hit four of a kind??
  - that guy that just hit the RF must be a first timer....the Casino always lets first timers hit someting big to suck them in.
  - after 10 cigarette butts and a mountain size pile of ashes on the hand rest by the buttons...I asked the lady next to me....do you need an ash tray?? "no way dear...I never clear away the butts until I hit someting big"! after she left without a win and leaving all her butts and ashes behind, I recommended to the casino manager they ban her from playing.
  - hey...this machine is out of focus and very hard to look at....probably not been played much and is ready to hit...lets play it!!

A few choice tips picked up from other players along the way....

Thanks and good luck, Chuck and Kathy

Funny that this came up as I am getting ready to head out
for a night of gambling. Major superstitions for me: lucky
coins, a worry stone that I rub before playing, making sure
there is a spot on the left side of the machine for my glass
of Scotch, wearing my lucky necklace, machine's number
has to end in an odd number, beard stubble, no killing of any
insects a week prior to playing, Sad, eh?

OK -- Mea Culpa.

I like to tap the face of the machine the number of
times I want "special" cards -- e.g., two to fill 3 to
a Royal, once to fill a straight/flush/SF, etc.
(erm, and for those curious, yes, two taps to fill a quad).
Then, and only then, hit draw.

I got a kick out of watching a man touch his discards to encourage the
machine to give him what he wanted. It took him a few times of not
getting what he wanted to figure out why. By touching them, he was
holding them, so he was standing pat on such hands as 3 of a kind,
etc.

I have none myself, Chris has a few random harmless ones (and If she
keeps hitting Royals and I don't I may pick up a few of hers!).

One really funny thing we've observed a few times is a person "making
love" to the machine. This one guy would rub it all over before he
started to play, hug it, and talk quietly to it. It did have one
positive benefit that I know of, most often he had plenty of space
since nobody wanted to sit beside him!

Read Bob Dancer's book "Million Dollar Video Poker" for some of the antics he used before drawing cards!

If you want to read a really fun book on superstitions, you've got to
get "Zolar's Encyclopedia of Omens, Signs, & Superstitions." It's a
blast!

I once did an article on the subject for Midwest Casino Guide on
superstition. Here's part of it:

According to the Dictionary, superstition is…
1: An irrational belief that an object, action, or circumstance not
logically related to a course of events influences its outcome.
2: An irrational abject attitude of mind toward the supernatural, or
God resulting from superstition.
3: A notion maintained despite evidence to the contrary.

According to Zolar's Encyclopedia of Omens, Signs & Superstitions:
"Superstitions are the survivors in the battle waged by reason."

According to old VP Pappy:
"Superstition is any crazy, weird belief that can't be backed up by
evidence or facts and is otherwise utterly useless unless, of course,
it's use results in the winning of money."

Zolar's book, among many others on the subject that I found, is a
very interesting and fascinating read, if you get into all that far-
out superstition stuff...and I do. It's filled with over 650 omens,
signs, and superstitions from around the world. It has lots of things
that relate to good and bad luck. Things like:

•"Money is on the way if you see someone wearing a polka dot dress."
•"On the way to gamble, it was thought good luck to encounter a
hunchback."
•"Gambling before 6:00 p.m. on Friday was thought a bad omen."

Buy Zolar's book, read it, but please don't take it too seriously,
unless of course, any of that stuff works, then let me know which
ones, so I can quit trying all the rest.

"In casino action, I've seen players stand up from a blackjack game,
turn around three times to reverse their luck, then proceed to
pulverize the house." --Mark Pilarski, Deal Me In
