If you want to read a really fun book on superstitions, you've got to
get "Zolar's Encyclopedia of Omens, Signs, & Superstitions." It's a
blast!
I once did an article on the subject for Midwest Casino Guide on
superstition. Here's part of it:
According to the Dictionary, superstition is
1: An irrational belief that an object, action, or circumstance not
logically related to a course of events influences its outcome.
2: An irrational abject attitude of mind toward the supernatural, or
God resulting from superstition.
3: A notion maintained despite evidence to the contrary.
According to Zolar's Encyclopedia of Omens, Signs & Superstitions:
"Superstitions are the survivors in the battle waged by reason."
According to old VP Pappy:
"Superstition is any crazy, weird belief that can't be backed up by
evidence or facts and is otherwise utterly useless unless, of course,
it's use results in the winning of money."
Zolar's book, among many others on the subject that I found, is a
very interesting and fascinating read, if you get into all that far-
out superstition stuff...and I do. It's filled with over 650 omens,
signs, and superstitions from around the world. It has lots of things
that relate to good and bad luck. Things like:
"Money is on the way if you see someone wearing a polka dot dress."
"On the way to gamble, it was thought good luck to encounter a
hunchback."
"Gambling before 6:00 p.m. on Friday was thought a bad omen."
Buy Zolar's book, read it, but please don't take it too seriously,
unless of course, any of that stuff works, then let me know which
ones, so I can quit trying all the rest.
"In casino action, I've seen players stand up from a blackjack game,
turn around three times to reverse their luck, then proceed to
pulverize the house." --Mark Pilarski, Deal Me In

I will venture to guess some of the posters on this board have a
superstition or two that?is part of their vp experience. For example,
wearing a certain?article of clothing or carrying a lucky charm. Then
there is a favorite machine because they hit a RF on it at least
once. Or how about NOT playing a machine because someone just hit a
Royal even though its the only one available at the time.
Here is one..patting a machine because it gave you a good hand
hoping it will give you more of the same because you showed your
appreciation.
Not practicing at home because you are afraid you will hit a RF
and it will jinx you because you are in a drought and you want to do
it at the casino.
Drawing four to a Royal and waiting for people to pass by you
before you hit the button.
These are just some off the top of my head. I am sure there are
more.
At least I am not superstitious...Knock on wood!
