Shutting down a paying machine

I remember in 89' working as a slot floorman at the Railroad Pass Casino.
There was a lady getting so many coins out on a quarter Joker machine that she
required several hopper fills in a two hour time period. The manager finally
shut the machine down and had the slot tech play it to see if what he
suspected was true. Yep. It was paying out two or three extra coins per payout due
to a worn out payer outer thingie. I remember the look on her face like a kid
caught with her hand in the cookie jar as they put all her buckets of
quarters on a cart so she could cash out.

I had a $5 slot machine that payed me one or two extra coins
everytime I'd cash out 20, 30 or more coins. The more I cashed at a
time the bigger the machine tipped me. However, I did the right
thing. I set all the extra coins aside. When I was done I called a
manager and gave extra coins back.

When 8/5 Bonus JOB first hit the street in AC the Taj shut down one
of the 2, one $ machines, they had; I got aces a few times and they
had to fill them more than they thought was right. Of course, I
squawked. Didn't do any good.

Not a machine shutdown story, but sort of interesting. My wife hit
the first $10,000 slot jackpot on the first electronic slots that
paid that much; at the Stardust. It was a 7-7-jackpot or some
symbol like that. Many of the slot change people didn't know what
was hit. The lady sitting next to my wife gave her sage advice for
the day, "Don't touch anything." A ranking manager suggested the
jackpot should be paid in cage area where other customers couldn't
watch the money being counted out. We were staying at the Frontier
at the time. Manager asked my wife to bank some of her winnings
into cage, for her "protection". This was a really big deal then.
When we left to go to the Frontier, security escorted us to the
curb and watched while we walked to Frontier. I'm guessing some of
the concern was to limit Stardust liability. Anyhow, I think of
things as they are today, they think nothing of counting out 20G in
crowded casino. It doesn't bother us customers to get it either.

Cheers....Jeep
