Should Casinos Award Slot Points Based on Age?

In today's mail I received an invitation to a show at Agua Caliente Casino. Bonnie Raitt & Taj Mahal, plus a free room, Sept. 25, 2009.

For those of you not familiar with Southern California gaming options, I'll simply tell you that this casino is about 20 minutes out of Palm Springs right off Interstate 10 which runs from L.A. to Phoenix.

Show invitations are something many of you get frequently. Obviously, there was something else in that invitation which I found of interest and a bit unusual.

In one corner, it said "Players 55 and Better (meaning older) Get 3X Points every Tuesday and Wednesday 5:00 AM- 5:00PM".

I'm not an expert on slot club rules and awards. But I honestly can't remember at Harrahs, MGM-Mirage, Wynn or any other place I've played that more points could or would be earned by players of different ages.

I can see the implications already. Though 3X points might not be a big deal players in pairs would always use the card of the "senior" player during those times. Or perhaps seniors who used to play on other days will now not do so.

Any thoughts?

This doesn't surprise me. I'm in the area and point-multiplier days are VERY
difficult to come by at Agua. Most other places do your standard mid-week
promotion but Agua is very selective on when/how much/who it gives its X
points to. On the other hand, they can afford to do it because points are
basically worth squat at all other PS area casinos, Agua is the only place
where they actually mean something. My favorite casino out here has 4x days
but their points are useless unless I want to buy 20 shirts with the casino
logo

I've seen plenty of instances where casinos offer point multiplier promotions for people over 50 or over 55. I wouldn't say it's extremely common, but neither is it all that unusual.

I am surprised you have not seen this type of promotion before. Many of the places I play have a senior promotion. If you notice, these multiple points, slot tournaments, dining specials, special drinks etc. are all run during the weekdays. The normal working stiff will be working on a Wednesday, so who could possibly the casino get to play in the casino on these days? Why the seniors who have a flexible schedule are the targeted group. It is a good deal for both the casino and the seniors.

Your example points to a much dumber promotion policy of certain Las
Vegas locals casinos. In the case of pairs (h&w, etc.) whose play is
not equal, casinos have been sending mailers not just with differing
free plays and differing points multipliers (which makes sense).
However, mailers have one partner getting free play on the same day the
other partner receives a point multiplier and visa-versa. Naturally the
free play attracts mimimal play and the bulk of the mutual play is on
the multiplier card.

Genius management then cuts back on 9/6 JOB etc., because their profit
margins are down. If there is one thing I would do if I ran a casino is
not to have promotions of differing kinds go to the same adress for the
same day which skews play toward one card.
