Sharing Good Plays - Was:Bob Dancer's CasinoGaming Column - 4 AUG 2009

Back in the good old days, there were a lot fewer players than today that had any knowledge whatsoever about good VP plays, never mind having the skill set to make use of them. Baically pre-internet gambling was a lot better, now there is too much readily available information out there.

As much as I hate the trend, I know it won't get better.

You may call what the casinos are doing as trying to make more profits, but I call it greed. That's what got them in this mess to start with.

How did all the older casinos make money when the vp machines had full pay schedules? Seems to me they must have done OK as they kept either building new casinos or added on to older ones.

People fall all over themselves looking for 100% payback machines. 100% payback to me means you are breaking even. And that 100% includes hitting a Royal. All casinos everywhere can have 100% PAYBACK MACHINES and they're still going to make money.

Yeah...how would you like to be in literally the middle of nowhere, on a 1%+ multiline play...and get the last seat in a bank of 5...and everybody was playing the correct game(s)?

THEN...15 minutes after the promo is over, one of those helpful types calls over the slot manager to complain that a couple of the programs on the game might be too risky for the casino to offer (let's just say...99.6-99.7, extremely high variance).

That's kind of where we're at with this. Bob Dancer would write that his idol was Stanford Wong, which kind of fits, because Stanford's books and websites did more to wise up the casinos than anything else. The difference between BD and SW was that BD was successful as a player, and SW really isn't, not by my definition. So, a good part of me believes that their writing is a form of revenge against the rest of us.

I'll tell you what's scary....I can name a number of successful pros who can play Jacks and (maybe) NSUD and that's it. I mean, the money used to be that easy. One casino I play at had offered some multiline 15-11 for a couple of weeks, and I watched one guy try to play it, sheets in hand (you know I love that), and was still messing up (15-11 is a lot more complicated than 16-10, but not as complicated as , say, the nearly defunct DJW)...they still pulled the game anyway lol. Back in the day, you had to know to play more complicated games, especially in AC, which were almost all joker games. With, I might add, a lot less information available to the public about how to evaluate or play them.

Paladin, I'd like to officially thank you. You seem to be the most open at sharing your perspective among the non-publisishing pro players.I enjoy reading your comments, opinions. While I don't necessarily agree the casinos owe anyone an opportunity to make a living doing not much besides gambling, that's my opinion. I'm a fairly new (6/7 year) relatively serious recreational player. I've played all over the US as I was traveling for work & now pretty much stick to midwest. local & 3/4 trips to Vegas. I probably play about 10 hours/week & stay to about 2 games which I've got down pretty well. I probably enjoy my time here on the forum reading others experiences about as much as my time in casinos. I've got most of the books, cards & Dancer software (old version still works for me}. I don't buy everything new that comes out, but will if I think it will teach me something new. I am either breaking about even or making a little $$$ with my new-found hobby. The free meals, hotels etc are certainly an additive to the equation.

In my opinion, VP & this forum has brightened my retirement life, & given me something to help keep the ole mind a little sharper as the hair comes off, & the pounds pack on. I thank all that are contributing to that, & that certainly includes Dancer, Scott, Paymar, & believe or not good ole Robby Singer (altho I'm not a follower).

I'm pretty sure alot of the 10K+ members fall pretty close to my catagory.
