Secret?

This is still a random game, and it is reactive, not proactive. That is,
despite all efforts to control the outcome, it's still up in the air. In
the short term, you are likely to see wide deviations in the expected long
term outcome.

I've just finished my 2nd month of playing only FPDW (quarter). At the end
of Dec., I was up $5000 after playing less than 50,000 hands (hitting 5
royals). In Jan. I've played nearly 100,000 hands (as closely as I can tell)
and am down just over $1000 (hitting no royals).

The biggest fun AND the biggest bugaboo to VP is the volatility. EV is only for the long term and that can be such a long time. Unless you are a frequent gambler, i.e., play often and for many years as a local somewhere, you may not play enough to ever reach that EV. But playing the best games is still better in the short term too - I hit this hard in Frugal 2.
