The "secret" as Quadzilla said, is to play only good machines and play as close to perfectly as possible. Follow his advice, it's good.
You don't say where you live. Is it in or near Vegas or AC or another regulated jurisdiction? How often do you gamble? That has a lot to do with it. If you live in Nebraska, and go to Vegas once a year, it may not be worth the effort for you to learn all the strategies. If you live in Philadelphia and go to AC once a week, better ]keep practicing. There are plenty of up and down swings in the game, and you could have just been unlucky in Vegas. I usually am.
I live about 10 miles from AC and gamble 3 or 4 times a week, depending on the promotions and what else is going on in my life. I keep a separate bank account for all VP activity (If I play reels or blackjack, that comes out of my regular budget.) If I win, it all goes right back into the account. Cashback and bounce-back cash, as well as anything I win in promotions (free spins, drawings, etc.) goes into that account. I also keep all my results on a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, so I can tell instantaneously how I'm doing for the month or year. BTW, playing this often, I usually hit only five or six royals a year.
For myself, after two years of playing advantage VP in Atlantic City _ where the games aren't as good as in Vegas _ I am slightly behind in my gambling itself, with cashback and promotional money bringing me to about even. (I have a real job.) The comps, gifts, free rooms when I want them, etc. are gravy. At one point, I was down almost $4,000. I could have quit, but decided to add to my bankroll, buy Win Poker to improve my skills, and got back to even.

I've been playing VP on and off for 15 years, and never come out ahead.

only gotten 5 Royal Flushes in my lifetime. I'm an intelligent person and
don't think I play like an idiot. Should I find a new game? Any advice?
1. Play the best games available. Be sure to include cashback in your
calculation. For the tourist, this really just means stick to FPDW.
2. Play sober, play alert. Vacationers tend to break these
rules due to the short time and desire to drink as part of the fun.
3. Stay away from poorly regulated casinos. This is more or less
saying stay away from indian casinos, since most state casinos are
tightly regulated.
4. I am guessing you have played no more than 500,000 hands of VP.
If so, being behind is unlucky but not amazingly so.
You did not say if all your play has been 0.25 FPDW or if it has
been a mix of denominations and games. If it is the latter, then
your results for this amount of play are going to very prone to
being subject to the whims of lady luck.
