Oriental
The term has become politically incorrect, I believe because a comedian used
it to say that certain gentlemen kept oriental ornamentals--meaning "working
women" of Asian decent. I wish I could recall which comedian said this--does
anyone recall? I do not understand anyone taking offense at the term Orient, or
Oriental. But, I believe the Asians very much like being referred to by their
country of descent. Asian's have their own little jokes, believe me, about
everyone on the map. Plus, they have their own jokes about themselves. Korean's,
for example, in LA who were born here--call themselves 1.5s--instead of first
generation, as they overwhelmingly take on the American/California Culture.
They are more American than American's!!! They are 1.5s.

It is very difficult to keep up with what those that speak Spanish, and have
Spanish blood wish to be called on an annual basis--Or for that matter, what
individuals originally descents of Africa wish to be called. Frankly, they
should make an annual statement on what the wish to be called as some of us just
do not spend that much time talking about them!!

I saw the Wynn/Vegasized version of Avenue Q yesterday, and there was a number that speaks to this discussion. The song was called, "Everyone's A Little Bit Racist" (listen to a clip of the song - http://tinyurl.com/b8aht song #6) and showed that by acknowledging differences, we can all get along better. It was a great song, and they employed a great way to make their points. Lainie

ps, the show was flawless, and I wished that it hadn't been cut by nearly 40%. I can't imagine that cutting the show improved it; I wanted to see more. After all, it won a Tony-award (which is proudly displayed in the theatre) for best musical. Regardless, it's on locals two-fers now and is a must see at that price.
