I am going to Reno with a group of bowlers in May. The organizer of the group is planning for them to stay at the Sands. I will be staying at the Eldorado. I've never been to the Sands, but heard it's crappy. Does anyone have any specific information I can give to her, to talk her out of staying there? She made the reservation because it's cheaper, but I don't think the group will have fun if they stay there.
Any help is appreciated,

There are a couple of things that I can tell you. It absolutely reeks of
cigarette smoke and is a few blocks away from the Eldorado, Silver Legacy, etc.
I wouldn't want to be walking in that area at night, or in the daytime for that
matter.

The Sands is not the fanciests place to stay, but if keeping the costs down it is really not a bad choice. The standard rooms are very large and they have some cheap food choices. The vp is not great, but that is probably not a consideration. The location is not the best, but all of downtown is not so good either. The Sands is certainly not my #1 place to stay, but I have done so and did not think it so bad.

I just got back from the USBC tournament. Almost all of the hotels have shuttles running between the hotel and the bowling center (Definitely Circus Circus, Silver Legacy, and El Dorado). It's not that far from any of the downtown joints, but with bowling balls, the shuttle's better. Harrah's is definitely the closest hotel to the bowling center (literally just across the street). You can call to see if the Sands is running a shuttle too.
You have to pick up your bracket money at the Sands, if you enter any brackets.
I had a great time, it was my first time at the tournament.
