Ya, it's one long mofo drive!

We've done the San Jose-Vegas trip and I personally think it can be
draining. Especially so on the way back.

If we have time and other things to do, we like cutting it in half.
Drive to Bakersfield or LA and stay night then drive to Vegas the
next day and same on the drive back. Most importantly on the drive
back because it can be such a long 9-10 hour bummer drive leaving
Mecca.

My wife and I make the drive from the East Bay to Vegas several times
a year. We're going again in about a week.

The drive itself takes about 8.5 hours. The route we find the
shortest & fastest is to take 101 to Gilroy, head across Pacheco Pass
to I5. South on I5 to 58, east on 58 to Barstow, then onto I15 to
Vegas. If it's a holiday weekend and Pacheco Pass (158 east) is
jammed up, we'll take 101 clear down to Paso Robles, then head east
on 46 to Lost Hills and I5.

Round trip from my house to Fiesta Henderson is 550 miles. We often
make the trip down in two pieces. Bakersfield is the halfway point
so we'll leave after work and drive as far as we can, then stop in
Bakersfield or Mojave, then make the rest of the trip in the
morning. On the way home we typically make the drive in one piece,
but stop along the way for lunch, gasoline, swap drivers, etc.
Because we stop 2 or 3 times, the drive home takes us roughly 10
hours.

The drive itself takes about 8.5 hours. The route we find the
shortest & fastest is to take 101 to Gilroy, head across Pacheco

Pass

I don't know when you are planning this trip, but the weather can be
a big factor. The San Joaquin Valley can be very bad for heavy fog in
December and January. I live along the way between Sacramento and
Fresno, and driving in the dense tule fog is really bad sometimes. 40
to 50 car pileups on I-5 and hwy 99 are not uncommon. Check for the
fog before you go, and if it looks like it might be bad, take the
Paso Robles route.

We've driven a couple times and haven't hit any bad weather. Guess we're
lucky.
The only way we know to go is down I5 - I guess having an alternate is good.
It's definitely more boring on the way home than going down there. We tend
to go straight there
but stop halfway on the way home.

I do agree with Skip Hughes, is such marvelous variation in Golden
State u can never explore to fullest. All rest of West are wannabes,
but it becomes escape from LA; retreat from Santa/Sand Valley. If and
when escapism don't rule there's a chance. So borrow $15 billion at
Junk Bond rates, get the act togeather. WX remains decent, most good
airlines lands there still. Hope for the Bear Republic exists (in TX
we spells it BEXAR but 'bout 13 years prior!) Our Santa Ana was
Generalissimo, still a Big Wind locally, caught like a rat in a small
tent! Desired to "Negotiate!" More they change, more stays constant,
CD.
