the El Cortez early evening
We were at the Golden Nugget last year summertime. I was on one of those good
health phases in my life when you get up and walk. Generally speaking, I just
walk whatever casino I am at early morning, hit the gym for weights if they
are decent and come back to the room in time (9:00 or so) for breakfast with
hubby. This time though, I thought I'd walk out side. Before I knew it I was
past the Fremont area and thought I'd see what El Cortez looked like inside. This
was morning folks, thought the cock roaches stayed in side when light hit?
Well, I was darn glad to have made it to El Cortez, called hubby and he --mind
you --drove down. There were several aggressive types in the area, and while I
did not look like I was carrying "$3000", I didn't look homeless.

C'mon, folks. You're running down my old neighborhood. Jackiie
works the checks at the EC. You know, Social Security, Mother's Day
(welfare checks), etc. Consequently, the clientele looks a little
rough. Full pay Jokers though. The walk down to the El Cortez is
not tough. The walk from the El Cortez to the Western at 3:00 a.m.
is the tough walk. Let me tempt you. The backbar at the Western
has 7/5 Bonus poker multi-meter progressive. RF .75%, 4 Aces .5%,
SF .25%, Small Quads .25%, Generic Quads .25%. If I'm down at the
old stomping grounds I play when the Aces or the Royal are up.
$3300 is my record for the Royal, $363 on the Aces. The bank gets a
ton of short coin action because the down and outers buy a roll and
play just to suck down as much free beer as possible. The real
logistical problem is, if you hit the Royal, getting safely out of
the neighborhood with the money.

On the walk, if someone says something to you like "you looking"
or "you set" or "what's up", that's one of the neighborhood crack
salesman. Not to worry though. He doesn't have any real crack on
him. Just fake stuff to rip off the tourists who happen to also be
crackheads. If the girl on the corner tells you she's in "public
relations", she's not talking about....forget it.

Hi Mickey,

You have a great sense of humor, and I very much enjoy your
Runyonesque writing style.

I have been following the "Safety" thread and read with interest,
the posts describing how "dangerous" it is to stay/play at the EC.

I have probably stayed at the EC 25 to 30 times during the past 10
years. Not once, have I had a problem of any kind, in the hotel or
during the once or twice daily walk from the EC to the GN.

I might add that I am not a young woman, and am very small in
stature. I am also usually ALONE on these walks.

I do have the sense not to wear expensive jewelry, to hold my purse
in front of me, to take my walks during DAYLIGHT hours, and to be
obeservant of those around me.

No person has ever approached me for pan-handling or conversation
during these strolls down Fremont Street. I have never been
frightened by anyone or anything while playing in the EC Casino.

I know most of the casino personnel, from the suits on down, and
they have always been extremely friendly to me and treated me well.

There are a plethora of older non-locals who stay at EC. Some of
them look so fragile that it appears that a strong wind could blow
them over. None of them look frightened by their surroundings.

I'm not sure why my experiences seem to be at odds with many other
members of the board. I can only address how I've felt, personally,
during my many visits to EC.

BTW, if all you advantage fleas want to leave the FPJW and DTD to
me, it's quite alright! (-:

Seriously, though, I finally made the walk to the ElCo on my last
trip, at night, and I was pleasantly surprised. There were a few
people hanging out on the street that I wouldn't invite up to my room
to have a beer, but nothing to be concerned about. And, I'm not a
huge guy, either. I'm sure walking in a group would make the walk
even safer.

Now the walk to the Western, I think I'd have to use the buddy system
for that. It does NOT look good, lol.

Binions! And no heat on the FPJW yet.

Yes the 17/10 Loose is at the Fitz. 101.6%

dipy911

Set up:

Standard 9/6 JoB with a progressive royal. Meter rate 1%. Bank of 20
machines. The royal resets at 4000 coins.

There are 2 groups of 10 people who play this bank of machines. They both
play perfect strategy for the given progressive level.

The first group starts playing with the progressive at reset and plays until
the progressive gets to 5200 coins. If the progressive is hit before 5200
coins they continue to play until it gets to that level. Once it hits 5200
the second group starts playing on the other 10 machines and play until the
progressive is hit. Once it is hit by either group the second group gets up
and leaves until the 5200 threshold is reached again. The first group
continues to play regardless of level.

Questions:

How does this impact the royal cycle for each group?

Which group has a shorter royal cycle?

Which group will hit more royals?

What is the expected cycle for each group?

Have fun with this one!!!

Hi all!!!!

Yes downtown has a character all its own. I would always advise
caution when traveling, and walking alone. I recently stayed at the
El Cortez and MSS, and saw adequate security in casinos and downtown
streets. Still caution is advised also. If a jackpot is hit a
casino can post a credit to a person who doesnt want cash on them,
just ask for a front money slip at the cashiers cage. And Binions
is a piece of Vegas history not to be missed.

And finally, isn't 11PM Vegas time close to noon??? At least in
most cities???

Hi, Babe. Thank you so much for the compliment. My experience is
the same as yours. I've never had a problem at EC. Just alot of
good times. Believe it or not, many retired people live in the
area. I have lots of old friends down there. I still get a kick
out of playing poker with Jackie Gaughan. It's just a 1 to three, 6
on the end holdem game with a one dollar blind, but Jackie pretty
much plays for a few hours every day. He's a consumate businessman
but a terrible card player.

I don't know of anyone ever being shot at the EC, but I do know of
at least 2 people being shot and killed in two separate incidents at
Harrah's on the Strip.

I always take precautions anywhere I'm at. I've had a safe deposit
box at Binion's for 9 years. I got it with a $75.00 deposit. The
use of the box is free. It worked great for poker in the old days.
I've kept it all these years so I don't have to go anywhere in Las
Vegas with alot of money on me. I just bring enough for what I'm
going to play. Any Royals I hit or if I have a good day playing
poker the money goes in the box. It's a great little banking system
for a gambler. Good luck.
