Back on July 16, 2002, John Frey wrote the following in a private e-mail to
me. He was 47 years old. Having gotten to know him a little in the months
following, I truly believe he wouldn't mind my posting what he sent me. Even
though we only knew each other through e-mail, I considered him to be my
friend.

I almost died, because of a heart problem in January 1993. Prior to the
incident, I was a pretty serious guy, and in some ways I still am. I am
still very logical and practical in my thinking, I try to remove all emotion
from my decisions and tend to boil everything down to basic facts, so I
appear to be slightly boring to those
who do not know me well. Others who do not know me well will classify me as
an idiot. I guard my true self well, and most people will never get to know
the real me. I have; however, changed dramatically in some areas of my
life, that is why I said, happily I am not serious. I do not worry about
anything anymore. The futility of worry became readily apparent nine years
ago. My importance to the universe also became completely clear. I now
realize that I have no more significance than a speck of dust in the scheme
of things. When I am dead and gone there will be no big loss to the world.
So now, I pretty much live for the day, enjoying every moment to the best of
my ability, knowing full well I may not be here tomorrow. Yet, I always
strive to contribute something each day. I look for ways I can help others,
and hope to brighten the day of as many as possible.
If I might say so, a fitting epitaph. Thanks for everything John, you're a
class act!
Rest in peace.
Brian
