Sad news, Elliot Shapiro passed away yesterday
Thank you for letting us know. It is such a shock, and I send along condolences to his family. Elliott's contributions here will be sorely missed.

I'm very sorry to hear that. Although I rarely saw him the last couple of
years he was very helpful to me with my VP when I first arrived in Las Vegas
7 years ago. I really feel for Joanie as I know she will miss him
tremendously.

I first met Elliot about 7 years ago, but I don't remember where or
under what circumstances. A week or two later, we met for lunch at
the old (pre-Stations) Santa Fe buffet. He taught me a perspective on
analyzing VP progressives that I never thought about. I was just
transitioning from BJ to VP at the time.
About two years later, I'm at the Golden Nugget sports book, playing
the $.50 8/5 Jacks progressive...it was at around $5,700 or $5,800 at
the time. I was playing for 5-6 hours with little success. Elliot and
Joanie just finished eating at the GN and were checking the
progressives on the way out. We said our hellos and within 15
minutes, Elliot hit the Royal. I congratulated him...and he was
almost apologetic...knowing I had been playing for a long time.
He will be missed. RIP

This is indeed, sad news. Elliot was not only one of the original members of vpmail back in 1997, but was active on the rec.gambling (other games) newsgroup prior to that, which is where I first encountered Net discussion of VP. Elliot was one of the most helpful persons I met in those days, always ready to answer questions. He was a great help to me in my video poker education. I had the pleasure of meeting Elliot in person a few times at invitational slot tournaments, and drawings. As far as I'm, concerned he's a very important part of video poker history in Las Vegas. This is just a terrible loss.

I also want to pass my condolences to the Shapiro family. I never had the pleasure of meeting Elliot in person, but he was always most helpful to me in several private email exchanges on Vegas plays for locals. He will be missed.
