I hate people watching for a very practical reason. I have had people watch,
cheer when I hit something, etc. Then I have been given hard luck stories as
soon as I've gotten a handpay etc. I am amazed at how often a stranger will hit
me up fopr money in a casino. When I was 21, before my VP days, I hot a
slot jackpot and was robbed at knifepoint walking back to my room. I just don't
want someone knowing if I am winning or not and watching to see where I keep my
money and the like. Nothing superstitious at all.

From what I heard from others, most of the thinking
behind this is that the person behind them is sort of
"praying/hoping for them to lose so he/she can take
over the machine". When this kind of thinking starts
breaking someone's concentration, the result is sure
enough onto the losing side. So, I do agree with the
others who said that one of the most effective ways of
dealing with this is to "stop play for awhile". What
worked for me really well was slowwwwwwing my play
quite a bit like (hold 1 card, pause for a minute or
two, look around, talk to a friend or two, hold
another card, straighten up the chair, etc.). That
person watching right behind me was "Gone in less than
60 seconds".
In one incident that happened to me, I think this one
is more rude. Every 5 minutes or so, this lady will
walk around and ask me if I am leaving soon or how
much longer will I be playing the machine. After 4
Aces within 10 minutes apart, I finally gave in and
gave my machine to her and moved 2 machines down. She
put in $100 then $200 and hit nothing then switched to
the next machine. Another lady sat on the machine, put
in $20 and hit another 4 Aces for $500. That could
have been my hit again but, then when I saw the face
of that lady who somehow made me changed machines, I
felt good enough and told myself "if I ever see this
lady again here someday, all I have to tell her is NO
I'm playing this machine for the next 24 hours.".
