Steve asked: Has anyone ever gotten a royal when using their software?
On WinPoker when playing personally, I never check to see if I
have the royal. I set it up for "no draw", which corrects my play and
doesn't finish the draw. When I'm practicing, I seeing whether or not I
know the correct play. How it actually comes out this particular time is
irrelevant to me. Even more so, I usually set the computer so it only
deals hands with a difference between the top play and the second best
play is .02 coins --- excluding ties. This helps me with the confusing
hands. A dealt royal (where the difference between the best play and
second best play is over 3,900 coins) doesn't come close to making the
cut.
An amusing story: A few years ago I was teaching a class at
Fiesta Rancho and Scotch Henderson was running the projector. To
demonstrate how the "With Fixed Cards" feature worked, we had Scotch
enter in Kh Qh Jh Th and let the fifth card rotate (with Auto Hold
turned on). With a 1-in-47 chance at connecting, I figured on average
he'd try it 30 times or so before connecting. On this particular day, it
must have taken 150 tries and five straight flushes. When it finally
happened, everyone cheered, Scotch stood up and took a bow, and I
resolved never to use this technique to demonstrate that particular
feature again.
Another interesting story: Sometimes we demonstrate the "Auto
Play Auto Hold" feature in class, and let the computer play by itself.
If we set it to play at maximum speed so we can get a feel for the
swings in 2,000 hands, the hands go much too fast to see. But when
royals happen (every 20 or so 2,000-hand-sessions), we can see the score
spike. On occasion (every 400 sessions or so), we'll see that we hit two
royals. We didn't actually get to LOOK AT the royals, but we know they
were there.
