Royal without max bet

We were at Mystic Lake this afternoon (an Indian casino in the
southwest suburbs of Minneapolis), and I frequently noticed people
next to me playing only one or two coins per hand.

The question is this:

Have you ever witnessed someone (or God forbid, yourself) hitting a
royal flush with fewer than max coins bet? What was the reaction?

Many many times. They are just as happy as you would be with max coins.

Bob

Yes, several times. The latest was a couple weeks ago in Ameristar,
KC, where a guy was playing a 5 cent 10-play machine. It was eating
his lunch -- as they often do -- so he cut back on per hand bet. The
next set of 10 hands, he hit TWO royals. I believe his reaction was
one of disgust.

My brother in law hit two 25 cent R.F's. in two days. He laughed them
off. A matronly woman sitting alongside of him, witnessed the second hit
and called him an idiot. When he told her it was his second one in two
days she really lost it. She cussed him out in good shape and stormed
out of the casino. (Sam's Town). Dick M.

I've done it, twice. Once I was playing some 'free' money that we got from
signing up for slotcard in the early days at Mandalay bay, and I was playing
some short-pay Odyssey machine, and only playing one credit at a time, as
you had to play all the credits first, and I was just maxing 'play time'. I
got a royal on the last few 'free' credits. Fortunately, it was one of
those machines that paid double the coins for a royal than normal for less
than full coin in! The other time, I was waiting for my partner to finish a
'hot streak' on the Double Pay aces at the Orleans, and I was just playing
some quarters I had in my pocket, one at a time. As I recall, it was also a
'double' for a short-coin royal. The coin person came over and said "UH OH,
who did *THAT*?" I felt pretty embarrassed, but winning was winning, so I
didn't mind too much.

I was playing with Viktor at GVR when he hit a royal at the same time as the
woman on the other side of me. We turned to congratulate her, and she
somewhat sadly said, "Yeah, thanks, but I was only playing two coins." Until
then, it never occurred to me that anyone played less than max (what's the
point?). I just said, 'Oh, too bad." We left shortly thereafter, so I don't know if
she changed her betting practice after that.

How interesting you should write this. We were at Mystic Lake last week ( Escaping the heat of Texas) and I did indeed witness this happening to a fine young 18 yr old sitting next to me. He was learning how to play VP and was focusing on DB. He was not playing max coins. I discussed this with him and he did start changing his ways. He then hit a quad of deuces.

The next day I happened to be sitting next to him again after I had returned from a trip to Lake Superior. He was playing max coins on and off. When I sat down he was playing MAX coins. He had 6 coins left and played MAX. With one coin left he started another hand. He kept an Ace and Queen of spades and then drew a royal flush.

He was obviously frustrated, but I did not show him allot of sympathy. I just told him, man, tough break, I guess you will play max coins now. You see, the young man was my son and I told him that experience is the best teacher. I am sure I will never have to tell him again about MAX coins.

Does that mean the casino allows people younger than 21 to gamble?

This summer a lady sitting next to me was playing only 2 coins on a .25
Progressive at Harrahs Shreveport. She hit the Royal with the progressive
at almost $1,800. She did not bat an eye and continued to play for about
five minutes (2 coins at a time). About an hour later she returned and
played 5 coins for about ten minutes, then switched back to 2 coins. The
Progressive still had not been hit. It hit at just under $2,000 by another
player who had been playing for only five minutes before striking gold.

Yes, In Minnesota, the legal age is 18. It should also be noted that Mystic Lake is alcohol free.

Two trips ago in Las Vegas I was saving money and put one dollar on a
dollar Bonus machine. I hit a Royal. Yes, I am ashamed to admit it
happened to me. What did I do? I felt my heart skip a beat repining
for the missed $4,000, and then I quickly played the next hand before
anyone looked and noticed what happened and rubbed it in. Since then
I try not to play less than five coins. I do have an excuse, dollars
Bonus was 8/5 on that casino, quarters Bonus was a sorry 7/5. Should
I have played full quarters instead? Why did I not get the darned
four aces instead of the Royal? What can I tell you, it is always
hard to do everything spotlessly right.

I can contribute a couple here:
The first one is not so much notable for the short-coin royal as what
came later. It's a happy tale but I was not a eyball witness:
In 1991, an attorney who was a craps and baccarat player was fiddling
around with quarter VP at the sports bar at the Golden Nugget. He was
dropping single quarters in and caught a $62.50 RF. Fast forward to
1999. The gentleman had now been playing vp seriously for about 18
months and was a vp-mail subscriber. But he had not had another royal
flush. Finally one weekend at the GN (again) he ignored his usual ($5)
9/6 JB and decided to take a shot at the $25 game. He had played about
20 minutes and was down about $1000 when he held JT of clubs and the AKQ
popped up for $100,000! From $62.50 to $100k 8 years later. I don't need
to descibe his reaction. Those of you who are familiar with this story
also know that barely a year later, he hit a $400,000 royal in Lake
Tahoe.

The second story is not at all a happy one and it's a good lesson for
those of us who play multiplays. Have you ever been playing Triple Play
and only had 10 credits left and decided to just play them off? I was
playing the Triple-Play progressive at NYNY when the gentleman next to
me must have done this. That's the only way I can figure how he had
managed to have 14 credits on his machine. Of course I didn't notice any
of that until I saw him hit a royal on the top line. "Alright", I said
$l,735!" I heard him mumble something at about the same time I noticed
that he had not won $1735, but $250. The guy said nothing else. Just
cashed out his 1,000 quarters and left. That must have been very
painful.

Others might find it disturbing, but I actively pursued a "short coin"
royal for almost 2 years at one casino in AC. The casino was a large
favorite of mine - sentimental reasons (I broke my vp "cherry" here),
plus I was well treated and regarded, and the cashback/promos were
very strong.

However, good plays could literally be counted on one hand. One
decent play was $5 9/5 DJ (AC), 99.9%. The $5 was well out of range
of my bankroll, but the single credit RF paid 500 credits providing a
respectable short-coin return of 99.3%.

I'm sad to say that the game got the better of me and I never did earn
the right to cry "I hit a short coin RF!"
