Is it my imagination, or is Rob the Steven Colbert of the VP world?

I would say it's the former. Steven Colbert does satire and is funny.

I'd suggest that the review is to be taken "straight up" -- but, of
course, it's evident by now that I view people with rose colored
glasses firmly in place

I agree with Harry 100%! I believe that the review by Rob Singer was
both thoughtful and laudatory. Rob disagreed with some of the VP
tenets that Linda Boyd (and many of us subscribe to) but basically gave
the book a very fair and complimentary review.

Steven Colbert is a political satirist, with a half hour daily show.
He does much "tongue-in-cheek" humor.

He was also well known as a writer on the "Daily Show".

I'd disagree. Stephen Colbert is an actor and a comedian who plays the part of a political
satirist on his show "The Colbert Report" (pronounced "Col-bear Re-pore"). He became
well-known as "correspondent" on "The Daily Show" with Jon Stewart (also an actor and
comedian who plays the part of a political satirist) and they gave him his own show as a
conservative version of Jon's liberal viewpoint.

Both shows are found on Comedy Central, usually run back-to-back, several times a day.

When Rob gave my "Million Dollar Video Poker" a semi-rave review
a few years ago, it floored me. He emailed me before he wrote it and
asked about a few quotes and then wrote a flattering review. A few years
earlier he wrote disparaging things about Jean's "Frugal Gambler" and I
expected more of the same for me, as his weekly columns advocate the
opposite of the advice I give.

He clearly felt Linda's book was well done, even if he disagreed
with part of it. I have not seen her book yet and I hope it's good.
There is a need for good beginner's books on our subject.

Rob is a difficult person to stereotype. Once you think you've
gotten him figured out, he throws you a curve.

Hi Bob,

I'm sure that you are correct in your statement that there is a need
for a "good beginner's book", and this one, IMO, fills that void. I
would most definitely recommend the purchase of the book to any
newbie who sought good advice in regards to playing VP.

However, I would certainly NOT classify this book as just
a "beginner's book". It is much more than that. Seasoned players
can also benefit from some of the material covered in the book.

I particularly commend Linda on the wonderfully formatted and useful
detachable strategy cards in the back of this compact and very
readable book. The ease of usage as well as the accuracy of these
SC's, which are included at no additional cost, makes the very
nominal cost of the book a bargain.

Yeah, he makes a refreshing break from the typical one-dimensioned
"advantage play" dissent.

Look past the vitriolic diatribe (the motivation of which I don't
grasp nor wish to) and he speaks with a well reasoned voice -- though
I differ from him in perspective

- H.

I have just ordered the book. I admire Linda and believe her to be the real deal. This will be
the first VP book I have bought since Frugal Gambler first came out! I look forward to reading
it.

What games are covered with the SCs

Stephen Colbert is an actor who satirizes self important, self promoting
chauvinistic demagogues of the variety frequently given radio and TV time.
I don't think it is meant to be a "conservative version of Jon's liberal
viewpoint," but rather a running criticism of another part of the media
machine... in much the same way the Daily Show comments on the news media,
though Stephen stays very strictly in character at all times. If irony were
radioactive anyone watching the Colbert Report would be glowing.

I'm sure if she could just forego some of those pesky math based
assertions... ahh, never mind:-) My congratulations on Linda's new book.
I know it is tough work to get a good one on paper. I hope to read it soon.

The number of thoughtful and eloquent replies to Matt's "Who is"
question is impressive.

The posts are sufficiently cogent that I'm tempted to ask "Who is
Donald Rumsfeld" in hopes of greater insight. (If you're compelled to
answer that one, please divert to FREEvpFREE ...

There's certainly a lot of "truthiness" in your analysis, Chandler.

For anyone interested, here's a URL to a Newsweek story on Colbert:
