or online this morning?
Rates:
I would have to agree about those exorbitant rates. I saw rates
charging $599. for three nights and calling it a package deal, for
a standard room. Aren't those rooms normally $18. during the week?
Crowds:
We were there early on in the event & before the massive crowds came
in 60,000-70,000 estimated from past river runs.
Maybe a few thousand were there when we were. Vendors and those who
come from very far, come in early. The day we left was the official
1st day and we saw THOUSANDS coming in on our way home, driving
back into California.
Police:
I may be a little basis ( both my kids are in law enforcement ) but,
we talked to a couple police regarding the crowds and upcoming
weekend. I did not see the attitude you heard about on TV, however,
I'm sure they were not going show ma & pa establishment any lip.
For this event, they pull police form NV, AZ & CA, a lot of retired
officers. They are on bikes ( bicycle ) cycles & patrol cars
Uniformed, clearly marked and non-uniform mixed in with the crowd.
Before you go thinking THEY are the bad guys think about
the task before them. I never could find out how many police were
on duty during the event. But, I am pretty sure it was not anywhere
near 60,000-70,000 and they are in charge of keeping order and
protecting everyone. You ever been around a biker who's been
drinking all day in the hot sun? these guys are not known for using
common sense.
Traditionally bikers ride into town TOGETHER to be intimating, do
you want to be the officer who pulls over 2-3 dozen bikers to cite
someone who is breaking the helmet law ? (your gang bikers, not the
middle age guy who can buy expensive leather & $200k RV's )
I think if you take into account the magnitude of this event and
how easy it could get out of control, you realize a little attitude/
authority might be in order. Each of those biker gangs, pack
weapons of some sort, mostly guns are always near by, not to mention
drugs.
To further praise their work, law enforcement does during these
events, 3-4 years ago, as many as 27 bikes were always stolen during
the event. Last year it was down to three only ( I don't know about
this year's numbers yet. ) That is because they set up sting
operations using bikes as bait, they weed out the guys who come to
town to steal bikes.
Sorry this turned out to be so long but, I'm so darn opinionated
about this subject.
Best Regards,
Lolly
