River Run

Something must be up.

Over the weekend I received a telephone call from the GM
at the Aqarius offering me 3 free nights during the
"River Run". He did a big cell on all of the "fun activities"
and did say this offer would go fast! It was a recorded
message left on my answer machine.

I do get many 3 night offers from them, but certainly did
not expect to be solicited for the River Run! I had booked
May 9th and 10th at the Aqarius for the Travis Atkins concert,
but will be cancelling that since my wife just schedule a trip
to visit her sick mother in Wisconsin from May 3rd through
May 10th.

I use to have a 50 cc Suzuki, but that became too much cycle
for me to handle as I got older.

Yea I think the recession is what's up. While I was down there I heard they were expecting
60,000 people for the river run. And sure enough, some bikers showed up as early as last
Sunday and Monday. But I wondered, in my own mind, if they would achieve that 60,000
figure with the economy as tight as it is.

We just got back today, from Laughlin, tents & music were in full
swing by Wednesday, in fact some were set-up Tuesday.
We had a lot of fun walking around taking in the sites. We're from
conservative Orange County Ca and got a big kick out of seeing the
exact opposite from ourselves. They were coming in by the hundreds
all day yesterday and on the way home this morning we saw literally
hundreds more coming in. It's my understanding today is the first
official day of the river run.

We noticed if you wanted to get away from the bikers all you had to
do was go walk along the riverwalk. All the bikers were outside in
front of the casino's, where the music, set-up BBQ's & booze was.

We did not plan to be in Laughlin around the bike run, we planned
our Grand Canyon trip a year ago ( due to the type of room we
wanted, we had to book that long ago. ) Laughlin is on the way so,
it seemed like a good fit, to stop on the way up and way back, so
glad we did, bikers and all, it was a very enjoyable.

I did manage to get myself in trouble with Harrah's security,
however. Our son had called and we were telling him how much we
liked Laughlin and he said to take LOTS of pictures ( our adult kids
frequently go to Vegas with us ) We were in clicking mode anyways
from the Grand Canyon and proceeded to take dozen of shots up and
down Casino Drive. While visiting Ramada they saw a sign outside
their entrance stating to feel free to take pictures inside.

I then assumed we could take pictures inside Harrah's, after about
my 5th shot a security guard approached me and said pictures were
not allowed and walked me over to an entrance, PAINTED, on all
Harrah's entrance doors ( I think just for this event but not sure )
it states in large white letters, NO COLORS, NO WEAPONS, NO DRUGS
and NO PICTURES. He was very pleasant about it and I just took my
camera to the room, with shots of Harrah's casino action and a lot
of bikers standing in-line to pay their $45 Harrah's was charging
them to park their bikes near the Harrah's front entrance, this was
in additon to checking-in.

A funny observation I saw last night was one obvious biker, tattoo
head to toe, biker wear, facial scars, cigarette hanging out of his
mouth, looked tough as nails, was sitting at a penny slot machine
banging away.....lol
it was just a funny looking image.

Best Regards,
Lolly

The Riverside has/had a sign inside stating that pictures taking inside
of the casino is welcomed.
We have always taken pictures discreetly of our royals at the other
casinos. Never had a problem.

The only issue that I ever had was at the Golden Nugget. I set my
amateur radio transceiver on the chair next to a slot machine while I
was getting my wallet out and was asked to keep the radio away from the
machine. I wasn't even playing the machine.

I just saw what they sold package rooms for, $599 for the run,
standard room, includes tax, most casino's.

Harrah's was a bargin at $550. No wonder numbers are down, these
casinos have been holding up these bikers.

One interesting observation my husband and myself noticed. Not
all, but a lot, maybe most, came without their women, that stuck me
odd and keep in mind a lot of bikers are middle age wanna bees,
their accountants and shady tree mechanics by day.

My husband says maybe their wife's/ girlfriends probably would not
ride all the way to Laughlin, from wherever their from, on the back
of a bike......lol

Well no wonder--- as soon as they found out you are an amateur radio
Operator you are under suspicion. Gosh, my HF amateur radio weights in
at over 70 pounds, and I would never think of bringing it to a
casino. I just wonder if there are any more out there that have the
same dual disease as us- video poker and amateur radio?

My good friend Jack owns hotrodhotlinebikes.com. He had told me a
couple of weeks ago that he was going to be at river run. I have been
unable to talk to him about the trip. So far he has no articles about
it on his website. I'm curious to here how the sponsors bikers feel
about the event.
