Rio VP

If you are talking about quarter play, I hope this does not sound snide, but
seriously, the "next best vp options" are in other casinos - the adjacent Gold
Coast and nearby Palms among them.

On our last trip there(Rio) they had pNSUD in 3/5play in the main vp
area at the far end of the casino opposite Masquerade side. Make sure
you check the pays though. This was back around the holidays.

Because you didn't know why I asked this and I think you assumed I
was some Vegas newby content to throw my money away. I didn't think
I needed to go into detail; I just wanted an answer.

So, to set the record straight, here are my thoughts.

The Rio comped me 5 nights free, being a Diamond member. I booked
the trip 5 months ago, way before they took the good machines out.

Because of this, I feel I owe them some small level of play, not
only because of the comps, but also to keep up at least the Platinum
level. I may never return to the Rio, but I still like the Showboat
in AC.

Giving the Rio some play can be debated, but the other reason I
don't think can not.

If it's midnight and I can't sleep, or I waiting for my wife to fix
her hair and makeup in the morning, I don't think it would go over
real big if I said "Honey, I'm going to tool over to the Gold Coast
for an hour. See you later." If I could spend some small amount of
time playing 8/5 JOB or 8/5 DDB, I would be happier than sitting in
the room watching reruns of Sports Center, seeing my fantasy
baseball team going 12/60 (.200) and my pitchers 0-2 with a 5.76 ERA
like they did yesterday.

Caught me in a bad mood, I guess.

Marketing offers are based on PAST play, so you don't "owe" them any
play at all. If your plan is to stop playing at the Rio, you should
stiff them 100%. They will continue to mail you room offers even if
you stiff them. I did this on 4 consecutive trips. The key is to
NEVER put your card in a machine and don't use ANY comps out of your
Reward Credit total while you're there. Simply staying in the hotel
will not "trip" you, so marketing will continue to send you offers.

few suits telling me I am barred, I pull out my invitation and tell
them I was invited back, I guess you guys knew you goofed. They
fluster around, get on the phone, do what looks like a comedy routine
and I am an honored guest.
Spent a few bucks in their gift shop for mints. Stay 3 nights, won
a few bucks at the tournament, played about 25 hours in other places
and not a minute at theirs, ate several of their meals for free.
That is how you spend time at Harrah's properly!
P.S. Marketing caught up (or was told to in my case) as I never got
another offer.

The last time I was at the Rio, the DDB progressive was still 9/5. In
the short term ("some small amount of time"), you will either get some
quads, or you won't. If you do, it will not have mattered if it was
10/6, 9/6, or 9/5 DDB.

Let's assume the quad is a hand pay and is an ordinary quad, which
should pay 250 coins. But the attendent only pays you 206 coins (the
average cost per quad of playing 9/5ddb instead of 10/6ddb). Would
that matter?

What's the most likely outcome of a short session: hitting a long-shot
progressive or hitting a bunch of short-pay winners that reduce the
number of session hands?

It's just not a smart play, and the more often you do it, the greater
your cost (until you hit the progressive).

Yes. Unless the guy hits the progressive on the very first hand. The
progressive is only some 2-4% of the machine return, the rest of the
return comes from the rest of the paytable.

full pay 10/6 ddb returns:
royal= 1.96%
straight flush= 0.55%
aces with kicker= 2.46%
aces= 2.78%
quad 2-3-4 with kicker= 2.29%
quad 2-3-4= 3.08%
other quads= 8.15%
full house= 10.86%
flush= 6.78%
straight= 5.1%
trips= 22.59%
two pair= 12.31%
jacks or better= 21.15%
total return= 100.06%
(numbers from winpoker)

Let's say instead that the same guy would have hit the progressive if
his money had lasted just a little longer. Would the paytable have
mattered???
Harrah's must love you.

Harrahs doesn't love me; I shorted the stock as posted here a few days
ago. I don't play at Harrahs.

Any number of scenerios could play out short term in VP; be it the
9/5, 9/6, or 10/6 paytable. The most likely scenerio is losing.
Perhaps it is worth the walk to lose a little slower. Perhaps not.

Applying the same logic ... The guy should never play VP and only play
the lottery because it provides a bigger win potential. The payback is
only around 50-60% but it shouldn't matter when he wins the big
prize ...

Just about my point also. Video Poker is a huge variance game. Royal
is a huge payout, without the royal or at least some other big payouts
you will loose most sessions. A question is, can you last long enough
for the machine to hit something good? The better the pay table, the
better your chance of lasting. Anything can happen on a session. You
might hit consecutive royals (in my dreams) or you could go months or
years without one. We are basically talking about which machines are
better to play during your VP life.

I'm not sure I'd short Harrahs stock. They are making a ton of money
off the WSOP since players sign over all rights to the corporation.

I agree completely. I play every day, and nearly 100% of the time, I
play 100% machines. If a session is defined as "short term", anyone
else playing as frequently as I do knows the session can be fabulous,
or it can be brutal. Many times I joke that an 11/8 DDB paytable would
not have saved me.

Playing long term at the Rio will be terrible for the VP player. But
for someone that might be playing an hour, and wants to build some
comps, and maybe even likes the atmosphere; well then, I stick with my
original comments that it's not the end of the world. Either some
quads will appear, or the money will DISappear.

I wonder if this would work for Harrah's Rincon. I received an offer from them even though I have never set foot in the place. It includes $150, 3 nights, Up to $300 in travel reimbursement, $50 food credit. The only problem might be the airfare reimbursement because you have to see a host "for assistance with reimbursement". I would love to visit San Diego on Harrahs buck but I wonder if they could refuse the airfare reimbursement if I did not play (it does say UP TO $300). From checking the database they have absolutely nothing playable under $5.

Also another question regarding the Rio and getting "tripped". How about when you use an offer for shows? You have to show your card when you pick up your ticket. I've never noticed if they record it or not.
