Rio JoB Downgrade

I have been gone for about a week and haven't had time to catch up on
the forum messages so maybe this has been posted. But today we went to
the Rio to use a BB coupon and found that all the $5 JoB in the High
Limit Room have been downgraded to 9/5. You have to play the $25
machines to get the 9/6 schedule.

So....does this mean that casino's cannot make a sufficient profit, even with a 0.5% "edge",
like they get with 9/6 JOB?

I spoke to the slot director (who may or may not still have that job)
right after they downgraded the $ 8/5 BPs. His attitude was that the
tourists were still playing them so why not?

I tried to point out that they might get MORE play with better pay
tables but this suggestion was rejected out of hand. I'm sure they've
done no analysis to see if that was a good move.

Harrah's has always struck me as one of those companies whose
attitude is "We make money so why should we try to maximize income?
Especially if it involves effort."

It simply means that they are greedy and want an even bigger profit

I've mentioned this a million times, but maybe it bears repeating
again. For Harrah's, Las Vegas is a "captive market". This means that
it's a seller's market. They will have high occupancy rates whether
the average theo on a game is 2% or 5%. The average tourist wouldn't
know the difference between 9-6 Jacks and 8-5 Jacks. At the same time,
I think you set the machines too tightly, you're not going to give the
customer any play for his money, and that's going to cause problems in
the long run.

I'm sure the slot manager has a pretty good gig, profit sharing, stock
options, and the like. Not like a slot manager at, say, MGM Mirage,
but still not a bad gig. He's not going anywhere anytime soon.

Harrah's properties outside of Vegas generally have actually decent
VP. One of their properties actually has $5 10-7-80 DB, and an other
one has a high limit JW2 progressive with a good meter (yes, there is
a catch). Sounds like something I should be writing about...
