Required Listening

I mentioned this on the air-last night, but for those of you that don't catch our show you need to hear this one. A poster here on vpFREE recommended I listen to a show on Stochasticity by Radio Lab a couple of months ago. I just heard it and was blow away by several orders of magnitude.

http://www.radiolab.org/2009/jun/15/

I can't say this strongly enough: If you are a sentient oxygen breathing carbon based life form you need to hear this.

In the show they cover attention bias and our tendency to overrate improbable events. They tackle the sports myth of the hot hand. There's a discussion of the effects of dopamine in the brain and how it influences pattern recognition and gambling addiction. Interviewed was a Parkinson's disease sufferer that developed a gambling problem when prescribed a particular medication. The story is heart warming/breaking. They even go into how real randomness differs from perceived randomness and how our our own biological systems are far more chaotic than scientists ever imagined.

It's one hour long and just amazing.

Just take my word for it and give it a listen.

Optionally, don't take my word for it and listen to it yourself.

That was me. An excellent explanation of randomness for the math timid... and very entertaining too. Radio at its best. Glad you enjoyed it.

Chandler, I did enjoy it. Their style is uber-entertaining. But I think I would have still listened if I had to crawl across broken glass naked in the rain with Mickey on my back.

This is potentially life altering info for those that grok it. It's entertainment factor is in my opinion secondary to it's valuable knowledge content.

Got anything else for me?

You're 1 for 1 on my best recommendations list.

No offense to any vpFREEers who may be gay but I've been a ladies man all my life. That is, when I can find one that will cooperate.

Not gambling related (occasionally in the vicinity
though) but nonetheless thought provoking and unique. May not be every
bodies cup of tea. I think it might be up Frank"s alley. I discovered this
show about a 2 years ago. The Night Air
http://www.abc.net.au/rn/nightair/default.htm. From Radio National in
Australia. Thirty minutes of weekly aural enlightenment. What Firesign
Theater was to fiction Night Air is to
topical nonfiction. Occasionally coproduced with the folks at WNYC Radio
Lab. Only archived to last 3 previous episodes. I would suggest changing
your rss setting to download all and save all if you enjoy. Best listened to
late at night on the verge of slumber.

PS. Frank on a side note. Can we please get a rss link for the Gambling with
and Edge show. Kind of a pain manually downloading shows when rss is
available for linkage to iTunes, Zune, Google reader and other rss catching
applications. Thanks for your effort in producing a very interesting show.

About the rss thing. I have no idea what that is. Never heard of it, don't use it. I also boycott iTunes, have never seen a Zune and don't know what Google reader is.

I guess I'll have to research it. Thank you for highlighting my apparently growing ignorance of what the general populace is using.

For the record I'm a pure Linux user and do everything in Ubuntu.

I'm using Ubuntu also, and love it. I used to dual boot with Windows, but now I just keep Windows on one computer only, just in case I absolutely need it, the rest is Ubuntu. In fact, I am currently typing this on Linux Mint, which is Ubuntu-based. Check out Mint, you may like it better.

Anyway, it has nothing to do with rss. I don't understand why it would be a "pain" to manually download your show, but I do find rss handy for a few other links. For instance, I use LVReview Journal's feed, and keep up on all the casino news. I also use Jean Scott's rss feed. It's handy. And like you, Frank, a year ago I didn't even know what it was. I'm learning. There's a lot of cool stuff out there.

Frank. RSS stands for Real Simple Syndication. In simple terms it is a web
feed. Blogs, podcasts and other content can be set up with RSS that
then automatically push that content to users rss aggregators, such as I
Tunes, Zune, Google Reader and many more including one that can be used in
linux. What is nice about it is if you find content you like and is that
content is regularly updated or new you can stay on top of it by using these
aggregators. Wikipedia will give you a pretty good explanation of rss. I
don't have a problem manually downloading episodes it is just
more convenient for your listeners if they have an option to automatically
download your content. I run windows, mac, ios and linux and rss work in all
of them. I agree on I Tunes but due to IPod and iPads it has the largest
user base. On my windows, mac and kubuntu machines I use gpodder. It is an
excellent free open source podcatcher. On ios (iPod touch/iPad) I use
Downcast app so I can steer clear of I Tunes controlled stupidity.I haven't
yet delved into android devices but I'm sure it has rss feed readers also.I
also use Google reader mainly for blogs and news feeds but I also use it for
podcasts, not to listen to but to let me know that there is a new episode.I
subscribe to over 50 different podcasts that have new episodes each to each
week. How we communicate, exchange and transfer info is changing our worlds
and rss is great way of doing this while saving time.

OK Fiveplay you have given me all I need. Thank you so much. Though I will never put iTunes on a computer I own, it is clear I need to provide the service to keep up with the Joneses.

BTW: I use Banshee, but don't listen to regular pod-casts.

Give me about two weeks to implement something.

~FK

Frank. Thanks for setting up rss feed. Below is feed url to copy and past
into Banshee's podcast subscription window after selecting the big green
plus button while in the podcast category. Clicking the link will just open
a web page with a lot of text which is the meta data for the podcast feed.
The url is what Banshee needs to point it to the podcast. Thanks again.

It's going to take roughly 2 weeks and about $500 to set it up. I'm working on it.
