Reno Trip Report - Part III

Saturday and Sunday were spent exclusively at the Eldorado. We walked
around a little bit and checked out the NSUD at the Silver Legacy. The
listing is accurate. We had been invited to a special "Sock Hop" party
at the Eldorado on Saturday night. Essentially, it was a "thank you for
being a loyal player" dinner thrown by one of the hosts. When I say "we"
I meant to say "we" and about a thousand other players. It was held in
their convention center and very nice. Some cash give-aways and a
(allegedly) 50s/60s band. The "band" consisted of a drummer, a base
player, lead guitarist, and a women who played the flute. As we were
walking in they were playing a Beatles tune. Go ahead. Guess which one.
Take all the time you need. Of all the Beatles tunes they could have
played, which one do you think they played? Ehhh, ehhh, I'm sorry, the
buzzer has sounded. It was "Norweigean Wood". I think because it was the
only Beatles song the flutist could play. They continued to play songs
from the 80s (NOT 50s or 60s; it WAS a "sock hop"). Turns out the leader
of the group is a personal friend of the host and was doing him a favor.
Overall, it was just OK. If invited again we probably won't go since we
heard that the band had played three years in a row. Let's get back to
gambling. Ah hell. VP play was NOT good for either of us on Saturday. We
lost LOTS! Sure we were playing on house money by this time, but still
it is never fun to see winnings going back to the house. Kept chasing
and hoping and praying that the losing will turn around. It didn't.
Prompted my wife to say one of her favorite sayings. "It is so easy to
accept the wins and so difficult to accept the losses". Still, we know
that VP is an up and down game. Hopefully, a random walk with an upward
trend. It got so bad and all the psychological beliefs kicked in... I am
playing a losing game and we are now going through the point where
things "even out" for earlier winnings. I even switched to 50 cents so
that my daily allotment would last. Afterall, I would rather play for
less money than not play at all. In the last hour of play, I hit a set
of deuces for $500, but that didn't begin to make up for the rest of the
day. Oh well, tomorrow is a new day and a fresh start.

Sunday I decided to start playing dollars, but lost $300 in less than 15
minutes. Since it was our last day, I decided to drop back to 50 cents
and if I hit deuces, I would take the $500 and go back to dollars. I
immediately hit deuces again and went to dollars and played dollars the
rest of the day. Called it quits about 7:00 PM and had dinner at their
steakhouse. We needed to get to bed early cuz the flight left EARLY on
Monday AM and flying East, we lose two hours. It would be after 5:00 PM
by the time we would get home.

Monday morning, the limo was waiting to take us to the airport and head
home. All in all, it was a very nice weekend. Both my wife and I needed
the R&R. We had been working hard at work and dealing with other issues.
Fleeing reality for a few days is exactly what we needed. Sure Tuesday
morning hit us hard, but we were ready to take on the world. We will be
back soon, Reno. Until you run out of chips, Las Vegas isn't even on the
radar.

Tom...

Play the high roller area??? As a matter of fact, we did. Our MO is that if and when we get substansially ahead, my wife and I "pool" our money and put $500 in one of the triple play machines. On this particularly trip, we did that THREE times and all THREE times we lost it all. Once we went nine straight hands without seeing a single deuce in any hand after the draw. Since you brought up the High Roller room, I will add that it is definitely not our favorite place to play. First of all, historically, we have never had much luck there. Sure, that is a "gambling thing", but still we have negative vibes. The staff is not (at least to us), very friendly and more importantly not very knowledgable; and this is the HIGH ROLLER area! Secondly, we are old farts and we like the music that is played throughout the casino, but in the high roller area, they play "instrumental jazz-type" music. ZZZZZZZ.

Two VERY MINOR inside tidbits... in the high roller room, there is a kiosk that is linked to the "Treasures of the Eldorado" game that is on the first floor. This means you can swipe your players card and get your "prize" without having to fight the crowd in the downstairs "TotE" area. Also, you don't have to sit through the "cartoon" of the explorer going out to the desert/crossing the bridge, etc. The second tidbit for fans of NSUD... right outside the high roller room there is a small bar that is semi attached to the Eldorado buffet. It has two bartop machines and they have NSUD. Just another option.

OK, here is a bonus tip, but you have to be platinum level player or higher to take advantage. If you take your players card into the Gold Room (or you can take it to the slot club), they can attach a magnetic code to it that will allow you special access to two bathrooms that are located in the OLD high roller area (behind Vito's bar). VERY convenient as it is the only bathroom on the main casino floor.

You can't be "Gold Plus" for that?

Fun read, and nice to see you posting again.

While I love the upside of dollar play, the negative fluctuations are more than my stomach can handle.

I think you were referring to the Sterling Sunday Brunch at Silver Legacy and not it's buffet brunch. Agree, one of my favorites, but I think the Sunday Brunch at Peppermill Biscotti's is even better.

To elaborate on your very astute observation... "...the negative fluctuations are more than my stomach can handle." I think that is a TERRIFIC barometer for deciding what level you should play. Essentially, it is the way I make that decision also. There was a time when playing nickels was a thrill. Then, when that became old hat, I jumped to quarters and my anxiety also jumped, but I rolled through that stage and eventually, did not receive much of a thrill with quarters. Now the dollar level (been playing that for years) is just about right and I will stick with that for some time. When ahead I usually go to triple play dollars, but even then, I get a little queasy. Once in a blue moon, I'll give the $5 machines a shot, but not for long. I am just not in that league. The bottom line... play what you feel comfortable with. Don't worry about what anyone else thinks. Be true to your school, er, I mean yourself.

I am not exactly sure what you mean by your comment. We are not at the Gold Plus level, we are at the Platinum level (higher than Gold Plus, I believe). If you care to elaborate, I will try to answer more specifically.

If we're talking Eldorado, there is no "Platinum" Level..
Only:
VIP / GOLD / GOLD+ / PREMIER / PRESIDENT

If you're GOLD+ you have access to the "Gold Room" (as well as a higher card level have access)
You said "If you have access to the Gold Room, then you have access to a secret bathroom behind Vito's bar."
This would be tremendously helpful, as the only bathroom they've ever told me to use is the one down in the events center (catacombs as I like to call it)

TIMSPEED...

YOU are (damn, this is getting annoying!) CORRECT again, sir.

At the Eldorado, I am Premier. MY shortcoming is that I am that level at the Atlantis and Peppermill and I equate a grayish/silver slot club card as "platinum". In MY case that would have to be a GENERIC platinum card, I suppose. I tend to get the cards mixed up since they look (essentially) the same and every once in a while I find my self wondering why the machine won't take my card. The answer, invaribly, is because I have put in the WRONG grayish/siilverish card in the machine. I will also mention that I did have to get a new card at the Atlantis on this last trip and they had redesigned it, but still, it was mostly gray/white/silver. Bottom line, nice catch, TIMSPEED. You caught me, you caught the Tater.

To continue, however... you are correct, Gold+ (and above members) are given entre to the Gold Room. THEREFORE, you are entitled to the bathroom code. Give it a try the next time you are there. It is a nice perk. While on the subject of the Gold Room, on this trip (I had never seen it before), they had a security guard acting as a "doorman" to the Gold Room AND also checking your player's card. If you weren't Gold+ or higher, you did not get in. I asked him if this was something new and he said yes and (for now) they are only doing it in the morning when "everyone" seems to come in for the pastries, juice, and coffee.

LOL at the Gold Room goodies. I've got Gold, but this was a very easy "self-comp" opportunity with quality donuts etc. Hat's off to the El for taking so long to shut it down. Must be the bad economy.

I've also done the wrong card-wrong casino move and on a few occasions even presented a competitors player card at the booth. And how 'bout that room key that failed to work! Have yet to pull out a player card in a credit card situation, but that's probably next.

As for the "corrections". We're just getting warmed up ... prepare for punctuation, grammar etc.

Sweet! For sure when I'm playing I HATE running down to the catacombs, I will definitely use the VIP bathroom from now on. (Similar to using the VIP Bathroom at Peppermill)

Yup, those are the coldest triple play NSUD machines west of the rockies !
2 trips ago, I complained to the head of ELDO marketing that my comps sucked and I was seriously thinking about playing anywhere but the ELDO.They mentioned that I had been playing with "negative comps" for a long time and their hands were tied.
Well, last trip while staying at my new home , Silver Legacy, I wandered into the ELDO and lost $800 in 2 hours on about $12,000 coin in.
Now they love me - nothing but offer after offer after offer. I guess they love losers there -negative comps be dammed !
best wishes....Tom
