Reno ramblings

Spent 6 days from 9/12 - 9/18 in Lake Tahoe & Reno. The first 2 days with my
niece & her friend in Lake Tahoe. We're all dog lovers so we had a lot to
talk about. They went to the annual Bark Fest in Incline Village while I
gambled. (BTW there's 2 casinos that I know of that are dog-friendly, Montbleu in
Lake Tahoe & Grand Sierra Resort in Reno.) Gambled at Harrahs & Horizon.
Didn't do an inventory but did find something that wasn't on the directory for
Horizon - two JB .25 5-play slant-tops not far from the Four Seasons restaurant.
On Sun I continued on to Reno while my niece & friend went home. The next 4
days were at Peppermill & Grand Sierra Resort but I had a side trip to
Atlantis one day & found a pleasant surprise there as casino construction next to
the parking lot had finished & there was a new entrance there. I used comps to
get dinner there & asked about the restaurants when a new one was mentioned
- Manhattan Deli. Went there & enjoyed one of the best corned beef & cabbage
dinners ever! Their waiters are young & new & it shows but tipped both the
waiter & the cook & asked the manager not to change a thing. Didn't have much
luck gambling but this is one of the few trips where I wanted to stay in the
room to watch TV. Last time it was the Olympics but this time it was history.
Starting late Sun night when the Lehman bankruptcy was announced to the
roller coaster ride our economy took during the next week. Most casinos have a
boring channel line-up which are heavy on financial but this time it was those
channels which were the most exciting as I stayed up late each night watching
the tsunami roll around the world. At one point, my stock portfolio was down
15% but I was more fascinated than worried as events that were happening had
never happened before & I knew I was watching history being made. However,
judging by the headlines, a lot of people missed it. On Monday morning, the
Lehman bankruptcy wasn't even on the front page of most papers (probably too
late to make it). On the Fri market close, the Dow was almost back to where it
started on Mon, prompting one analyst to comment on the boring week since
nothing changed!
