reason for 5% promotions

The average casino is a 99% grind joint, you know, games like 9/5
jacks, 8/5 bonus, 9/7 double bonus, 9/6 double double bonus, 15/9/4
deuces, etc. Without a promotion or strong cash back, knowledgeable
players won't play this. As a result, this casino's steady customers
are losers, so the casino hold is more like 10%, which is great for
the casino, only problem is, after a while, the losers start to
realize they are losers and play drops off and maybe they even start
looking around at other casinos. So, marketing says, time for a
promotion, and 5% seems pretty reasonable, considering a 10% average
hold. Problem is, some wise guy spots the promotion and posts it on
the internet, or just tells a friend who tells a friend ... Next thing
you know the knowledgeable players show up, and once the knowledgeable
play exceeds loser play, the casino is at a disadvantage (promotion
costs more than new action generates) and soon the promotion will end
and the cycle begins again.

Casino manager tip: generating volume (action) and profits (hold) are
easy, the trick is to do them both at the same time, thus maximizing
profits. machines too tight - action drops off, machines too lose -
too many winners and profits suffer, some where inbetween is nirvana

Casino player tip: when you find a generous promotion, don't tell
anyone, the more people that know the less time that promotion will be
available. posting it to the internet is as good as killing it
immediately, but even telling friends will limit play time
