Reading Strategy Cards

Hi Again,
One of the problems I had trying to play VP in LV, was I was not sure "HOW" to read & understand the strategy cards. I printed them for 9/6 JoB from Frugal Video Poker. I spent A LOT of time trying to decide "what" I had & what to do with it!!! I know this is part of learning, but it seems that reading a strategy card is almost like reading a foreign language! Maybe if I bought a set of strategy cards they would come with a how to use/how to read instuction manual..but all I know for now is 'keep the best from top down'. Anyway, if anyone has time, could you give me some insight on what the following information means. I copied these from the strategy cards I took to LV with me.

4 Card Straight Flush
- I assume this means ANY 4 cards of a stratight flush?

4 Card Flush, 0 thru 2 High
- Please explain what I am looking for on the screen

4 Card Straight, 2-Q: Open (0, 1, 2 High)
-Please explain how to read/what I am looking for ect.

3 Card Straight Flush, 9JQ, 9TJ, 8-K: Dbl Ins (2 High), 8-Q: Inside (1 High), 3-T: Open
- Please explain how to read/what I am looking for ect.

3 Card Straight Flush, Any Low Ace, 7-K: Dbl Ins (1 High), 234, 2-T: Inside
- Why does the 3 card straight flush repeat (also noted above), How do I read, what am I looking for ect?

3 Card Straight, JKQ
- What if I had JKT? Do I read this to mean it only applies to JKQ, if I have anything else I would match it to something else on teh strategy card?

3 Card Straight Flush, 2-T: Dbl Ins
- Same questions...

Patricia - You might want to try the Video Poker tutoring software on
Cap Richard's site:

http://www.videopokerwizard.com

The good thing about Cap's software is that a table that looks very
much like a strategy card is on the right side of the screen. As each
hand is dealt the software shows you what "type" of hand it is and
where it appears on the strategy table relative to the other hands.
Very useful for beginners.

of Bob Dancer's Strategy cards (see bobdancer.com or Gambler's
Bookstore), and--ideally--his series of Winner's Guides. Then,
referring to the applicable Strategy Card, simulate play of the

Go to the strategy page for 9/6 JoB in FVP and click on the
"Help" button on the right. Then click on "Straight and Other
Chart Definitions" for an explanation of all the terms and
abbreviations.

I am at about the same level of playing video poker that you are, I think, and I found Roger Fleming's book "Win at Video Poker" very helpful. The only game it provides strategy for is Jacks or Better, but it describes the terms "open" and "closed". It also explains in great detail why one choice is better than another. Probably useless for an experienced player, it was very useful for this beginner.

Try others , i perfer the simple stratergy chart from wizard of odds
web site ,others tomski , check data base for others,

  i perfer words to numbers on charts , one of the sites uses

picture of hands ,

I practice at home using a chart, helps a lot.

This is what I would suggest: As a practical matter you can't play vp
enjoyably in a casino, or fast enough, if you need to constantly make
reference to a strategy card. In order to really learn the game you
must internalize the stategy in your head so that upon reading the
five cards dealt you almost automatically know the correct hold.
Ocassionally you may have to ponder a bit, but generally you should
recognize right off what to hold and what to throw away. This can only
be accomplished by playing many (and I do mean MANY) practice hands at
home. Turn on the tudor function and just start playing hand after
hand. When you make a mistake you don't understand check the details
and the card for insight. You should expect to spend a year or two of
regular practice in learning a new game. As a general rule, I only
play two games, 10/7 DB and Kings or Better Joker. I can tell you that
it took me four years of practice and casino play to learn 10/7 DB. In
the casino I almost never refer to a card. As I said, you must
internalize the strategy so that you know implicitly the correct play
with only infrequent reference to the card. Then you'll do well and
enjoy the challenge of the game. There is simply no substitute for the
many hours of practice required.
