Read The Fine Print

Folks, I know it's a hassel, but you have to examine that VP machine
when you sit down at it.

The T.I. has removed the "MAX" buttons from those 1-100 coin machines
because too many people were pressing it thinking they were betting 5
only to see their whole $100 gone in one play (lucky for me I got a
full house for $900 the one time I did it and never did it again).

Be careful at the Mirage - that button may still be active there.

The T.I. gets the 2005 Deception Award for having adjacent Bonus Poker
machines with different paytables. One pays the traditional 400 for
aces, 200 for 2's 3's and 4's and 125 for 5-K. The other pays 150 for
all four-of-a-kinds. It might just get you a tad upset to have those
four aces pop up with 100 coins in only to be paid $2500 instead of
$8000. Especially when you spent your life savings thinking you were
playing traditional 8/5 Bonus Poker.

What will they think of next?

When I play at those types of machines, I bring a cap from a half gallon of milk and cover the button with the cap. This makes sure that I don't press "max" by accident. It's probably saved me from at least 20 errors.

This is an excellent suggestion. I have tried this myself using a
cleaned and dried overturned coffee cup. Though it may seem to be
in your way til you get used to it, it can save you a ton of money
and aggravation.

My best suggestion though, is, if it is at all possible, to avoid
these "thieving" machines. Many of us play by rote, and will hit
the spot where the max play button is located, out of force of habit.
