I am sure that the following is of significance to some members of this list. I don't have a CLUE, but if it has significance relative to VP, what is it?

Have you heard of the Riemann Hypothesis? It says there are
connections among seemingly random prime numbers. And a Purdue professor is publishing what he says is proof of the hypothesis.

Prime numbers, such as 17 and 31, are divisible only by themselves or 1. Random prime numbers are crucial to encryption, which is used to protect commercial exchanges over the Internet.

Among heavy-duty thinkers, there is concern that this breakthrough could make prime numbers predictable, rather than random. And that could nullify the benefits of encryption.

In the year 2000, the Clay Mathematics Institute offered $1 million to anyone who could solve one of seven math riddles. The Riemann Hypothesis is included in that seven. The professor, Louis de Branges, has published his solution on his Web site. It is enormously complicated, so it will be awhile before it is accepted or rejected.

This is THE greatest mathematical problem of all times.
Karl Sabbagh's book "Dr. Riemann's Zeros", and Julian Havil
book "Gamma", both writtn for the general public, may also be of
interest to some of us. "Gamma" is an extremely well written book,
if there is one book you want to read on this subject, this is it.

De Branches has made similar claims in the past (but he did proved
Bieberbach). The jury will be out for a very long time - don't hold
your breath, and don't bet on it!
