Random Number Generator

Furthermore, if the RNG were only to be run once per time the game needed a

obvious to someone seeking out such patterns, thus making the game vulnerable
to cheating.

Using ones brain to figure something out is not cheating.

Actually, I didn't write that, it was somebody responding to my post (you mis-snipped :). In fact, I agree with you, it's not cheating. The poster should've said it makes the game more vulnerable to being beaten by someone who could detect patterns in the RNG sequence.

In fact, I seem to remember seeing a TV program about a former Nevada Gaming employee who tested machines and was indicted for using the knowledge he gained to predict RNG sequences. He claimed that the pattern was fairly easy to spot. Perhaps someone can fill in the details (his name, facts of the case, etc).

You may be thinking of this group. This article also contains
information on how the RNG worked 15-20 years ago. I doubt it is
significantly different now.

Actually, I wrote that and your point is well taken. However, from the manufacturer's point of view, they wouldn't want any discernable pattern to appear in their RNG's sequence, after all, it's supposed to be random.

This is from memory, I don't remember all the details but in the
olden days the RNG used the same seed every time the machine was
powered up. A casino in Canada that shut down overnight powered all
the machines down. In the morning they would reboot with the same
seed. A patron noticed that the Keno game had the same results on the
first play each morning. He made a lot of money before alerting the
company and the government. He was then arrested for cheating but
charges were later dropped. The problem was then corrected.

You remember the Nevada situation correctly. Again, it happened a
long time ago and I would bet the mortgage that there are no longer
discernable patterns, even by Gaming Lab techs.

Interesting excerpt. Very similar story to the one I heard, except I think he worked for Nevada Gaming or maybe IGT, and he got caught playing slots and sent to prison.

Yes, there was the guy that worked for gaming control board. He and a
friend got caught in AC after the friend hit the Prog KENO for around a
million bucks on the first card the friend played, if memory is right.

The guy that worked for game board also put some kind of code in the
RNG (or some part), to where he could bet in some sequence, like bet 1,
2, 2, 1, and so on and then hit a jackpot.

That was back in the 80's I think.
