Questions on the drive via rt 80 Sacramento to Reno

I'm going to arrive on a Friday night at Sacramento Airport ( via Jet Blue NYC ) at 10:30PM, rent a car, and drive straight to RENO. Has anybody done this ? I understand its about a 2 1/4 hour drive , without too many rest areas or well lit sections . I'm just concerned I may be a little too pooped to make it all the way ...please comment.

It's an Interstate (I-80) but has many curves and steep grades. There
are 2 rest areas, one about half way to Reno and one at Donner Summit
about 40 miles from Reno. You will be climbing from sea level to 7200
ft and down to 4200 at Reno. By the time you get your rental car it
will be 2-2:30am EDT. Only you know your limits. You ought to be
able to get a motel for $50-60 near Sac. It's a scenic drive and you
will miss that at night. I would opt for sp0ending the night near Sac.

That is my favorite time to drive this stretch. I hate Sacramento
traffic, and at that time of night there are seldom any issues. The
drive is an easy one. The rest stop at Donner Summit is open, but
they are doing a major remodel on the Gold Run rest stop and it is
closed. Don't make the drive if you are too tired. You can easily
find a motel in the Roseville or Auburn area if you get started and
think you need to rest.

Just to add to that, there aren't any hotels after Auburn until you
get to Truckee. Also it can be difficult to get a hotel on summer
weekends in Auburn, generally easier and cheaper in Roseville.

I drive this stretch pretty frequently. One of the rest areas each way is
closed right now.

Call 511 when you get in to check conditions. There is some widening and
repaving road work out in the rural parts, but it doesn't cause backups and
it's not much of an inconvenience. 511 would tell you to "expect delays" but
I wouldn't. Call to see if there's any serious accidents that close the
Interstate down.

It is a very scenic drive. If you enjoy scenic drives, I would recommend
staying in Sacramento, taking US 50 to Carson, and then head north to Reno.

I'm sorry to hear you're going to miss the firework show :frowning:
I make the drive almost every weekend from Modesto to Reno (3 hour trip).
I'd say the drive from Sacramento to Reno is better than the stretch
from Modesto to Sacramento, because it's a much more fun drive
(curves, uphill/downhill grades) If you enjoy driving, I'd say do
it...but if you despise driving, good luck getting a motel on 4th of
July in Sacramento.

I prefer to do this drive at night, but keep in mind, it is called
Donner Pass (as in the Donner Party) so if you do the drive, bring
someone meaty

I don't care for I-80 from Sac to Reno, too crowded too much traffic.
I think it's much nicer to go the Susanville route and then instead of
coming across to Reno you are coming down from the north. Less
traffic, the road is way less windy, approx the same distance driving
but much more pleasant. Mark

You don't want to stay at a rest stop (they are pretty nasty) and not
safe IMO. You have lots of exits on I-80 that sell gas, have clean
restrooms, ability to buy hot food, cold drinks, snacks, etc. Also,
you can crash in your car for a few hours.

Two of my favorite exits are Donner Flats and Emmigrant Gap (it has a
burger king). Donner is 40 minutes from Sacto and Emigrant is about an
hour from Sacto. Keep in mind gas is extremely expensive at these rest
stops.

It's actually a very easy drive; the freeway is good all the way. At
that time of night, I would expect to make it in 2 1/2 hrs from the
Sacto airport, which is way out on the northwest side of town (be
sure to take the 80 bypass, crossing to the north of Sac, rather than
going all the way into town. There are two excellent rest stops on
the route, one at Gold Run, past Auburn as you start to climb up to
Donner Summit, and one at Donner Summit itself.

If I were doing this, though, I would stay overnight in Auburn, and
make this very beautiful drive in daylight. As you say, why make the
drive when you're pooped? It IS a mountain drive, and you need to pay
attention--why not just wait til morning, and enjoy the drive then?

Thanks to all for the great replies. I've decided to stay overnight at the Auburn Travelodge in the foothills. They have a free breakfast in the morning. The other factor was that I would have to earn a 3 night comp over at the Peppermill, and now I only need enought action for a 2 night comp - which will take off a lot of pressure , should I go into a losing tailspin ( I hate to play for comps @! ).

Just in case anyone uses this thread as a reference in the future, I-80 is
currently undergoing heavy construction (repaving it looks like - it's badly
needed) and there's frequent stretches of narrow lanes and slow traffic
because of it. Also the rest area at Gold Run referenced a couple of times
in this thread is closed and it looks by how they closed it that it will
remain closed for a while.
