Questions about Theo (Not anyone from The Cosby Show, JT)

I understand theo to be the theoretical profit that a casino makes
from the average player at a particular machine. I further understand
that this figure is often determined by the manufacturer, but a
different figure might be used by a casino given their experience. My
assumption from this is that theo is a percentage of coin-in that
should remain fairly constant (subject to occasional adjustments by
casino management).
For the past few months, everytime I play at Belterra in Indiana, it
takes more coin-in to get one point on vp.
The coin-in for one point has slowly increased from about $14.70 to
most recently about $19.50. The coin-in varies depending on type of
machine, but my figures are from 50-play 9/6 JOB.
I emailed the new G.M. at Belterra to register my dissatisfaction
with the continuing (and unpublicized) reduction in points and cash
back.
He very kindly and promptly responded. Among other things, he
stated that their cash back is based on theo and would remain that way.
Does theo typically keep changing (especially negatively) every week
or two in most/any other casinos? Is my understanding of theo (as
stated above) correct?
Interestingly, the G.M. also referred me to vpFREE to verify that
their vp inventory had decent pay scales (which it does). Hello, Mr.
Kaufman.
Thanks for any clarification or insight on theo.

Your expression of theo is fairly accurate. Frequent adjustment by a
casino is unusual.

However, adjustment in general isn't -- particularly on stronger games
such as 9/6 Jacks. An unanticipated concentration of skilled play
(one sufficient to crowd out less skilled players), sometimes prompted
by attractive promotions, can result in a significantly smaller hold
than the casino expected when originally setting theo. The casino
responds accordingly.

The other adjustment that can affect how much play is required to earn
a point (or cb/comps) is a decision by the casino simply to alter the
percent of theo returned to the player (or to shift that return
to/from other promotions).

The above statement provides further support to this belief that many
of us hold: At least some casino personnel DO read this message board,
and WILL take action in response to posts such as "the 3rd VP machine
from the left by the elavators at XYZ casino gives points at the slot
machine rate".
