Would any of you folks care to share with the group how you started
gambling? What age were you at the time and what game you played or
ran?

After traveling all over the United States I told the hubby I wanted to go to
Vegas. He said "why, you don't gamble?" (he was a bookie at one time). I
said I want to be able to say "been there, done that" so he said OK. I went
to the book store for a book on slot machines..i'm the type, that anything I
do I want to do it to the best of my abilities. Every book on slot machines
said ...learn this video poker, its the only beatable game in the house. So
back to the book store I went. We both learned to play and that very first
trip I got a royal in clubs, holding the queen, ten. And we've been hooked
ever since.
The really funny part of the story, tho, is when we first started playing we
used to alternate turns on quarter single line games. and over the 8 or 9
years we've been playing now, we've worked up to playing (but still
alternating) on DOLLAR triple play)

Hi. The statute of limitations has passed, so I can go public.
   I first played a slot machine when I was 10. We lived in Baltimore, and slots were legal in Anne Arundel County, Md. We went with another family to a place called Dairyland, that had a big buffet, entertainment and _ slots. When the security guards turned their backs, my friend and I threw some nickels into the slots. I lost 15 cents. My friend hit for 20 nickels. A dollar was a lot of money to a 10-year-old in 1963, and I talked for weeks about how she hit the jackpot.
   As a teenager, I used to love to play the wheels of fortune to win stuffed animals at the New Jersey shore. I guess you could call that my first advantage play. The boothling started the wheel spinning, and the player pushed a button to turn the machine off and the wheel would coast to a stop. On some games (usually 15 numbers or less), I was able to figure out exactly when to push the button so I would win. I had a box full of stuffed animals down the basement to prove it. At one booth in Asbury Park, I won one stuffed animal for myself, one for my boyfriend to give his sister, and two for my brother to give his girlfriend _ on exactly four plays. I'm sure the guy was glad to be rid of us. (I was discreet even back then. They stood apart from me, I told them what number to play and to keep their hands off the buttons.) There must have been several people like me, because when I tried this trick as an adult, it didn't work. They must have varied the speed of the spinner or put in a delay when you push the button or something.
    I was living in Philadelphia when the casinos opened in AC in 1978. I didn't go til March 83, and that day I mostly walked the Boardwalk and played a couple bucks in nickels. But a few visits more, and I was hooked. I went to Vegas for the first time in December 1986, and have gone back at least once nearly every year since.
