Things change. We also used to indent five spaces for a new paragraph,
right? Now we just add a blank line and start the new paragraph without
indentation. And some things are different when we write a letter on paper (actually we
write it in Microsoft Word), or write an e-mail.
Part of life is adapting to change, both in writing and in video poker! I
wax philosophic, and use a soft chamois.

I learned to type back in the stone ages too. I was taught the same
thing. Two spaces after a period.
Ditto here - learned in Jr. High School around 1951 or so.
