Protecting Your Winnings

Here is an old Frugal Friday column which addresses this issue.

In addition, it is a really good idea to not leave the casino immediately
after hitting a big jackpot. Walk around, visit with friends, walk through the
gift shop, have something to eat. Bad people who would rob you on impulse are
not going to follow you around the casino for more than a short time, and if
they do, you might spot them, and take defensive action.

Howdy

I read about an elderly man in AC being robbed of his 10000 dollar jackpot
recently when he went to retrieve his car in the casino garage. The perp(got
that from tv) escaped in a taxi (go figure). In hinesight his first major
mistake was he did not request a check. Second he could have requested a
guard to
walk him to his car.Third he probably did not project an intimadating image
and was by all accounts alone. Some of these circumstances were immunable
but
it seems he could have lowered his chances of this thing happening.

What could you have advised this gentleman beforehand to circumvent this
expensive lesson?

Just to add a thought or two:

The cage can be your friend. I'm not talking about a safe deposit box
-- just an account on deposit. In A/C, this is typically called a
safekeeping account. In LV, it's usually called "front money" (more
often opened as a large deposit of cash upon arrival, or an advance wire).

For a moderately large sum, I much prefer it over a room safe.
Deposit/withdrawal in A/C is akin to dealing with markers and running
a transaction (or two) a day isn't much trouble (I'm talking about
handling it in sums a bit greater than $500 a shot, but not $5K
bricks). In NV, if you turn over cash it seems they physically set it
aside in an envelope rather than simply receipt it ... I find it
rather remarkable.

Once when I was on a winning streak in AC and had limited interest in
either stockpiling cash in my home or doing short term deposits (I
have faith in the ying/yang of gaming), I ran an ongoing cage balance
at the casino for over 2 months. They didn't have any problem with
it. I kept the receipts safe.
