Protecting Your Winnings

Howdy

I read about an elderly man in AC being robbed of his 10000 dollar jackpot
recently when he went to retrieve his car in the casino garage. The perp(got
that from tv) escaped in a taxi (go figure). In hinesight his first major
mistake was he did not request a check. Second he could have requested a guard to
walk him to his car.Third he probably did not project an intimadating image
and was by all accounts alone. Some of these circumstances were immunable but
it seems he could have lowered his chances of this thing happening.

What could you have advised this gentleman beforehand to circumvent this
expensive lesson?

I think the best piece of advice is to talk about your jackpot as little as possible. In other words, don't tell anyone unless they are good friends and then keep it low key and don't start conversations with people who happen to notice the jackpot on your machine. This may seem rude and unfriendly but it is for your protection.

When leaving be aware of your surroundings - -who is in front of you and who is in back of you.

Many casino's have safe deposit boxes you could use to secure a big win. additionally you could place cash in safekeeping at the cashier window.

We have asked security to walk us to our car at least one time after we hit a $20k JP and they were happy to do it. Being keenly aware of your surroundings and timing your departure with others is also effective. Checks are great, but are a pain in the tush to cash and it takes forever to clear after deposit, but I guess that is better than having nothing to deposit. Last but not least, tell Valet where you parked your car and tip them nicely to go and retrieve it while you stand next to the front door secuirty person chatting about life.

While i do not have to concern myself with 5 and 6 figure BR anymore i
still take precautions with any win that a crackhead or lowlife would
be interested in stealing. my starting BR is usually $400-1000.

after a huge 5 figure win the casino is your friend they will do almost
anything to accomodate you. armed escort, safe deposit in cage, room at
reduced or zero rates, have valet or others go get your car.Security
probably wont accept a tip, but toke the valet well for helping you out.

I am now confined to a chair, sometimes electric other times manual,
but if I win i catch a ride home in a house limo or taxi. because i
play 25 cent tito machines i do not celebrate and i quickly play one
more hand and cash out and then quickly deposit a 5-10-20 dollar bill
in the machine to erase screen history and continue playing. most of
the casino atm machines will not cash a ticket over $1199 so i go to a
change person and not the cage to cash my ticket, it seems to keep the
transaction more lowkey and fewer eyes see the payout.

If i take taxi i have then make a few rights and lefts along the way,
while im watching the traffic behind me, even though i live only 1/2
mile from casino, because of my infirmity i am not safe til i get
behind locked door of my condo. In Nevada, a CCW permit is not
impossible to obtain, so if they rob me it is possible they will
successfully get the cash along with a few ounces of lead. Truth is if
they dont beat me,hurt me, or break into my house theyll probably get
the cash.

On the Atlantic City incident, I would think the casino should have
offered assistance (guard or valet) to the old man.

Another suggestion which I have used is to request, "Please pay me in
high limit". Those watching from afar will not know if you took your
winnings in cash or as a check that way. And you'll have much more
privacy in high limit. You also have the option of a "double count"
through the bill counter to make sure you were paid properly.
Meanwhile, an attendant will happily watch your machine outside
while you are away to protect your remaining credits.

Then, when you do finally leave your winning machine, take a
circuitous route back to your destination. If the menacing figure you
noticed is still right behind you after you've done a few "figure
eights" continue to stay in a crowded public place. Or, as suggested,
request a security escort.

I had a large winning night some years ago at the Leelanau Sands at Suttons Bay Michigan. When we left the building they had two guards walk us to the car. I knew one of the guards, who told me they had a car and would follow us as far at Travrse City. Now that is service.

HA. Let's all have a good laugh about that one...I won Aces and kicker at Borgata on a dollar machine. $2000. A lot of people saw me win and came around and congratulated me. it made me nervous. it was 10 at night. I wanted to go up to the room but charlie was nowhere in sight. i went to Security and asked if someone would escort me to my room. They were very gracious. they sent 2 guards, one man, one woman, with me.

I got into my room safely, and I tipped each $20, I was that relieved. it was worth it. they accepted it politely. Everybody was happy...Annie

I once was at a casino with a freind of mine that won 38K on a bad
beat jackpot in the poker room. we left the casino the next morning
(we played all night) We had about 50 dollars between the 2 of us. No
we did not lose it all. He had the casino bank do a echeck to his
bank account for the whole amount after fees.

expensive lesson?

Whenever I had a large jackpot that I was uncomfortable carrying the
cash around, I would simply refuse the cash payout and request a check.
Usually a casino will do it for any amount.
The only time I was refused the was at the Four Queens they told me
they would only do it for amounts over $5000, so my $1 royal ($4000)
had to be paid in cash. So, I took a cab back to my hotel since I
didn't want to take the bus back.
