I think this issue can be boiled down to one simple fact. Smoking is a foolish, disgusting and self-demeaning habit, while video poker can also be a habit (with many adjectives attached, depending on which anti-gambling personality you talk to). Gamblers tend to be smokers, while non-smokers tend not to be caught up in a gambling lifestyle.

It is true that many N/S sections are relatively empty. It is also true that, almost w/o exception, the casinos put their very worst pay tables in N/S areas. By doing this they are effectively telling non-smokers: "OK, we've provided you with your darn N/S area, and you're not utilizing it. As we've said right along, gamblers don't care about N/S gambling!" Typical Casino mentality.
Until the N/S MAJORITY assert their right to a safe enviornment in which to gamble (by not patronizing the arrogant casinos who promolgate the abhorent practice of populating N/S sections with 8/5DDB & 6/5BP machines) this practice will continue.

Non smokers are VERY passionate, and I am one of them but these discussions always remind me of the two casinos in Laughlin that have non smoking sections. I play in them but they have less than 10% of the clientele of the smoking sections:-)
