Thanks for the suggestion. I'm always interested in reading books on
gambling more for the stories than for the theory <smile>. I'm now reading
Blackjack Autumn, recommended by someone on the mailing list and enjoying it a lot.

Whale Hunt is published by the same people who publishes Jean's
books...they all cross promote each others work on this site and
other places, so I would take Jean's recommendation very lightly. The
excerpt I read in a magazine of the book was horrible.

I disagree. I have always found Jean's recommendations to be honest. The book is interesting. I definitely do not agree with some of the hosts methods but the reading is definitely amusing. I don't think that the authors on this site are cross promoting their books.
It is just a good discussion. It definitely beats reading the airline magazines on the way to Vegas!

I read Whale Hunt . I know and agree with what you say about the cross promoting among Gambling authors and publishers. I found the book to be very interesting.
I think that most people that are into gambling and the comp game would also enjoy reading the book. This is an unpaid recommendation.

There is no "conspiracy" to cross-promote Huntington Press products. I never mention most of them - not because they are bad, but because I am too busy to read them. If I do read one and I find that is helpful for players, I write a review of it in Frugal Fridays - but I do that for anything I read, many of which are NOT published by HP.

I recommend Whale Hunt in the Desert, not because it helps people become better gamblers (although any gambling book adds to one's general knowledge and probably is helpful in some way in the future) but because it gives details about the host system and high rollers that I found absolutely fascinating - and many details that I did not know before even though I am quite knowledgeable about the system as a whole.

I read the book recently courtesy of the Clark County library. I
found it to be an entertaining read, but I can't recommend actually
buying it. Cyr does come across as kind of a jerk, but let's face
the truth; a casino wants to extraxt as much money as it can from
every player, and Cyr is one of the best at making that process as
enjoyable for the player as possible.
