Progressive VP Strategy

Hi, new to this board. Having some difficulty navigating around for
information. My question is: What kind of strategy do you need to play
for Progressive games? I see them all over but remember from somewhere
that there is a different strategy for playing. I want to learn it
before jumping in.
I would appreciate any help.

The strategy changes only because the paytable is changing. As a
progressive increases it impacts a few strategy items where the royal
is part of the possible winning hands. For example, a high pair vs.
RF3 usually changes at some value of the RF. Not only that, but it
changes differently depending on exactly which RF3 you have.

If you have a specific game you're interested in playing then ask and
someone may already have computed the strategy changes. I know many
people who ignore these changes and play normal strategy since they
play progressives very little.

If you want to do it yourself use one of the software tutors and vary
the RF payback. Then analyze hands like the example above and you
should be able to find exactly what you want.

Someone else recommended that you use a VP software program to change the royal amount and then generate a new strategy (both the Frugal VP and VPW software can do that). It was also mentioned that many players do not change their strategy. Both of those are very good suggestions.

If you want to know more about playing progressives there is whole chapter full of advice in the FVP book. Here is one excerpt:

"There are two ways to look at strategy for progressives. Again, the specialist who's well-bankrolled usually wants to maximize his chances to hit the jackpot sooner (although there are variations on this, especially in team play). This usually necessitates increasingly aggressive strategy changes as the jackpot goes up. However, this makes the play much more volatile, because you will lose much faster before hitting the royal - and you won't always be the one that hits it! Therefore, you'll need a very large bankroll to tide you over until the odds turn your way in the long, long term.

"The other way to play progressives is to stick with the basic strategy for the base game- and many recreational players do just this....
No, you won't have quite as good a chance of hitting the royal as someone who is playing more aggressively, but you won't be losing as quickly, either! And if you do hit the royal, then you are that much further ahead in the win department. This is a good conservative choice for those who may have a large financial bankroll, but a small psychological one - they just can't take severe "drain" on their money. If you have a small bankroll, this is probably the only sensible course for most players."

There is also a good resource booklet you can take into the casino, The Frugal VP Scouting Guide, which gives the break-even point for over 175 VP schedules. This would show you when one might be playable for you.

Skillful luck as you study!
