Progressive Meters

Just curious....

Does anyone know why a progressive meter would keep
running, when none of the progressive machines are
being played?

Many progressives are set up to "lag" behind the true meter amount.
That this is the case is far more clear than why they've been set up
that way. I assume a psychologist would be best equipped to say.
Maybe those in the casino who decided to have it work that way
consulted a psychologist. My speculation is that a "rolling" meter
makes it look like there's "action" going on, which makes people who
are passing by more likely to "join in" on it and play.
