progressive meter error

Yesterday, I had an incident at the Majestic Star (Gary IN) where I am the
vpfree2 monitor.

I was playing a 25c 9-6DB (Actually has other games on this link but I was
playing the strongest EV.) Progressive with three meters (RF, quad aces,
quad 2/3/4).

The combined values of the meters and cashback made this barely a 100% play.

I had put $80 in the game when I made quad deuces for $118.25 but the meter
did not reset (to $100).

Because the meter did not reset, I continued to play and made four aces less
than ten hands later for $215. Again the meter did not reset (to $200).

note: Those two meters would not be enough to make the game 100% but the RF
(and 4x points) was high enough to cover the rest.

Shortly after this, somebody else hit the low quads (for $119.25) and the
meter did reset. Because of that, I stopped playing.

Now the issue: Obviously my machine (but not the seven others in this bank)
was not resetting for progressive hits (Both progressives I hit paid the
full progressive amount rounded to the next higher quarter.).

I was leaving for the day so I told a house
person about the "leak". I did not want to be accused of anything. WAS I A
TOTAL FOOL FOR DOING THIS?

Usually, when this happens, the machine isn't adding to the meter,
either, so, as long as each machine is played the same amount, it
doesn't affect the average jackpot, and it's unlikely to be noticed
until a royal is hit on it, assuming it's a hand-pay.

Howard I think you've realized at this point that you probably messed up a good play for some other players who have likely been taking advantage of that game.

I would have kept the information to myself and returned frequently to play that machine.

Before someone else says it -- yes, 5 years ago I would have probably posted the error here on vpFREE! I've learned my lesson. But even that wouldn't have been as bad as telling the casino!

Remember as someone else pointed out early in this thread, usually in this situation the machine neither resets the progressive NOR feeds into the meter. In that case the casino is actually stealing from the players too because a portion of the play from that machine is not being returned to the players in the form of meter advancement. It actually ends up being kind of a wash for the casino and players.

The only time I have used this situation to my advantage is when I am playing a progressive bank solo and one of the meters is disproportionately high so I can hit the jackpot multiple times without lowering the EV of the play. Chances are this technique may not work if the jackpot is a handpay or w-2G event as the casino personel may notice the failure of the meter to reset.

At that point, the other players are being robbed of the increment rate you
should be contributing, should one of them hit it.

Yes.

A) You are not a fool since the machine could easily work against the player.

B) These are machines (moving parts, meter movements, etc), and it should be common knowledge that machines do break down or don't work perfectly. People, please control your expectations about machines working perfectly.

C) Also, you are dealing with software, i.e. the information has to be sent to the server (or some central processing place -- excuse me since I don't work in IT). I was playing in one casino were the server was so slow, the meter movement was updated as a "batch process" as opposed to updating every second. I already commented before about rely on meter movements because the information can be stale. Don't be surprise to think the meter is some level only to find out the real meter had been reset. It is frustrating.

D) If meter movement didn't work, you wouldn't hesitate to call a slot attendant because the game was defective. Since the meter did reset in your post, it could be a glitch in the software or something else at work. And since we don't know the actual reason, it's just conjecture.

I wouldn't worry about it.
